We have a router in our home but the signal does not reach our backyard birdhouse. 

 

We bought a AX1800, but it appears to be a router and not a wifi extender.

 

What would be a better choicw?

The router can be udes in Access Point mode which can extend the coverage. You need to connect it to the  router via Ethernet. The AP can then have devices conne ted via WIFI. An Extender can connect via WIFI to thr router. Extenders are not expensive. Just be sure to place the Extender where it gets a good signal from the router.
