Brand new out the box. connected it to my softbank modem (I am in Japan).

it can only access a few sites.

google. amazon. facebook.

cannot access mailchimp, zoom, or other smaller sites.

the internet light in the front is orange.

I tried to do quick set up but doesnt work and IP address is coming back 0.0.0.0

Based on what you have said that is a communication issue between the router and the modem. Now we don't know anything about Japan's providers but here in the US if the provider was a cable provider this thread could answer the question. https://community.tp-link.com/us/home/forum/topic/150603

If you are not on a cable provider this solution may not work. You would want to contact your ISP and let them know your modem is not providing an IP address.

Also so you know for global customer we have a seperate community. https://community.tp-link.com/en that may be able to provide more details for products in your region. This community is mainly for US customers and products.

If you are using a VPN and depending on the server's location (ie a different country) may be the issue. Also try bypassing the router and connect your PC direct to the modem and see if the ISP is blocking the sites.

Also see if you have both IPv4 and IPv6 connections from your modem and router. Use one of the many online tools such as https://test-ipv6.com/ and what is my IP.
