Model: Deco M9 Plus
Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version: 1.5.6 Build 202110118 Rel. 35617

We currently are using the Parental Control features on the Deco M9 Plus primarily to manage the amount of time that our son can use his iPad. After enabling the feature, it quickly became apparent that there seems to be issues with with how the app calculates usage. Ideally we would like our son to be able to use his iPad for a maximum of 2 hours per day, which is the current setting. Unfortantely, he has been way less time than the 2 hours. He has been getting mabey 30 minutes of use on his iPad before the Internet goes down. Can somebody please clarify exactly how the Deco M9 Plus parental control feature calculates time? I have a couple of theories/ideas that might be causing the issue but I am not sure.

1.) time used is based on adding the time together of all the apps that are actively being used

2.) apps not being used that are transmitting data or allowing location access

BTW -- he is using the following apps on his iPad

Spotify

iTunes

Roblox

Fender Play

Sora

Gmail

Google Drive

Google Classroom

Thank you for your feedback.

This one might be relevant. Take Gmail for example, you might not open it but it will keep receiving emails from others.

So some system applications run in the background, which would cost an amount of online time.

Yeah that is a common concern.  What is happening is that is likely background actions.  Anything that would use data would, even background actions like checking or doing app updates, background app refreshes, or location checks counts toward the data usage.  Basically anything that requires connection to the internet will count as data usage.  Unfortunately there is no way for the router to determine what type of tarffic is limited.  Access to the internet is access to the interent and that is what it is looking at.  What you might want to try is the built in feature called Screen Time.  It is found in the iPhone or iPad settings app.  I can confirm this feature is available from at least iOS 12 and up.
