Model: Deco X20
Hardware Version: V4
Firmware Version: 1.0.2 Build 20220401 Rel. 63997

I'm setting up a Deco X20 network, and I have many questions, but just one per thread...

I've got two nodes set up and running. The main node is in Access Point mode because my cable modem takes care of DHCP and other services.

I still have my old network set up, both as a basis for comparison and to use until the Deco is ready.

The old wireless network is a single TP-Link ARCHER-C7 v2.

For some reason, the old Archer network reads as almost 2 times faster on download than the new Deco. The main Deco is on the second floor next to the Archer. The second is in the living room, adjacent to where I am, on the first floor.

According to Speedtest by Oookla, the Deco, on the 5Ghz network shows:

14 ms ping, download 211Mbps, upload 22.6Mps

The Archer-C7 network at 5Ghz shows:

11 ms ping, download 413Mbps, upload 22.2Mps

I've run the test several times, and the results are consistant.

Environment: MacOS 12.5, MacBook Pro M1

Here's what the Mac's network info shows:

Archer-C7:

IP Address: 192.168.0.3
Router: 192.168.0.1
Security: WPA2 Personal
BSSID:84:16:f9:cb:7b:c7
Channel: 149 (5 GHz, 80 MHz)
Country Code: US
RSSI: -63 dBm
Noise: -91 dBm
Tx Rate: 650 Mbps
PHY Mode: 802.11ac
MCS Index: 8
NSS: 2

Deco:

IP Address: 192.168.0.3
Router: 192.168.0.1
Security: WPA2 Personal
BSSID: 54:af:97:0d:96:27
Channel: 40 (5 GHz, 80 MHz)
Country Code: US
RSSI: -53 dBm
Noise: -89 dBm
Tx Rate: 680 Mbps
PHY Mode: 802.11ax
MCS Index: 8
NSS: 2

Do any of the assembled wizards have any ideas why there's this discrepancy? Even better, any ideas on how to fix it?

Let me know if there's any other info I can gather that would help.

Thanks!

-Eric

A few more points, after reading other similar (but not identical) postings:

  • Since I'm in AP mode, there are no QoS settings to disable. In fact, the only settings I can change are Fast Roming (disabled) and Beanforming (enabled).
  • I'm not trying to compare the speeds I'm seeing with the download speed my ISP provides. I'm comparing two different wireless networks, one old presumably clunky one (which is fast) to the new spiffy sleek Deco one (which is oddly slow)
  • I get the same result when my laptop is 10 feet away from the second Deco node, in the same room.

So more data...

Did more speed testing, came up with these results:

Connecting laptop directly to second Deco with Ethernet/Thunderbolt bridge: 238 Mbps
Wireless connection to the second Deco:

160Mbps. Laptop was 6" from Deco

Wireless connection to old TP-Link Archer C7: 238Mbps

All wireless connections were on the 5Ghz band. The Archer C7 was a little more pokey than usual. I was streaming some video through it at the time.
