@pqbrown iPhone 8 running latest iOS is the only one that stays on 5ghz. Macbook, ipad have not moved off of 2.4ghz since I turned smart connect back on and they're within 8 ft of the router.

@pqbrown @aoscott

Right now i do not have a time table for that.  I will keep you posted when i learn more.  I can suggest two things 1. to disable Smart Connect or two temporarily set up two networks.  Assign the 5GHz network the Smart Connect SSID you want to use.  From there connect your 5Ghz devices to the router and then setup Smart Connect.  Use the same name you used for the 5GHz name and save the settings.  Since these devices were already connect the should (and i stress should) stay connected to the 5GHz in Smart Connect mode.

If they don't then i would recommend refer to option 1 until we can optimize the feature.

@Carl My assumption is no, but would I see any improvement in this feature if I upgraded to the AX3000 instead?

@pqbrown

unlikely, the software component for smart connect on both devices would likely be the same so likely the same complications.

I've got SAME issue: Router is 2 feet from my iMac. Connected via 5ghz the speed is perfect--I'm getting FULL download/upload capacity of my Xfinity service. [350 down / 22 up] If I choose Smart Connect, my iMac is shifted to 2.4ghz, and a speed result that's ridiculously low. [20 down / 22 up] If THIS is how Smart Connect is gonna work, I'm pondering returning my AX1500 (Archer AX10) before my 30-day return period is up.

same issue on TP-Link Archer C7.

I disabled "Smart Connect" which is not as Smart as it should...

Enabled both 2,4 and 5GHz networsk with same SSID doesn't help at all.

Disconnecting and connecting once again does the job...but it isn;t smart :(

Does anyone have a solution?

Experiencing exactly the same problem! When I turn on Smart Connect, multiple iPhones and a MacBook get connected to the 2.4G network. Weirdly, there is another MacBook consistently pick the 5G. Tried turning on/off and rebooting the router multiple times and still couldn't get things work as desired. Firmware is the latest (1.0.2 Build 20190809 Rel. 28188) but it seems that there has been no update since last August.

Ended up having to disable this feature and manually connect to 5G for those devices to get high-speed network.

@aoscott Same here, all my devices were hooked to 2.4 GHz, only my TV camp at 5 GHz so far.

Maybe some optimisation can help out here.

I have exactly the same problem with you guys! I'm using Archer A6 and if Smart Connect is enabled, every devices will connect to an already crowded 2.4GHz. The first reason that I bought the router because of this feature. But, because it isn't really smart, I have to disable it and manually connect each device in my house.
