HS230 won't turn off from satellite switch if brightness at 100%
HS230 won't turn off from satellite switch if brightness at 100%
As stated in subject. The satellite (load side) switch works fine, as long as the brightness is not at 100%. When it is at 100%, the lights will not turn off when using this switch. The line-side switch works fine, as does remote operation (since that communicates with the line-side switch). I have another one of these in another room, and that pair does not have this issue.

@Exx1976 Has Kasa support provided any more information or a solution yet? I'm having the same issue.

@410bn nope. They sent me an email and wanted me to remove my lights from the ceiling and tell them what they were, to which I replied "go fly a kite and fix this half-busted nonsense you sold me".
No response. Shocking, I know, but this seems to be the new "normal".

good evening ,
have you had any luck with your satellite switch?
I just bought 12 sets of Ks230kit and some work fine and three sets doing the if full brightness 100% the satellite switch will not turn off the lights, take down one dim level and it works fine. Makes no sense, it's frustrating

Hello everyone,
If you experience similar concern that KS230 won't turn off from satellite switch at XX brightness level, please help provide information here and email to support.forum@tp-link.com with title ' Forum ID 536750 + Description' , our specialists would like help look into that further:
- the model of bulb & its wattage : e.g. 60W Incandescent bulb model XX
- Please describe phenomenon in details :
Does satellite KS230 switch turn on/off the light at any brightness level?
- If you have multiple sets of KS230 kits, you may change the location or swap the KS230kits and see if the issue occur with certain location or the brand of bulbs.
note: this post will be marked as solution of this thread, so users could see these in full easily and provide further feedback, thanks for your understanding.

No, I never did get a resolution from tp-link. They sent me an email and wanted me to go pull lights out of my ceiling and get them model numbers and wattages and all sorts of other nonsense. First off, in my option that information is irrelevant to the fact that they can't make a product that functions properly for all scenarios, and second off, I'm not going to start removing recessed LED fixtures from my 9' ceilings. When I told them I was not getting out a ladder and removing fixtures that were installed by a professional electrician so that I could get them model numbers and part numbers and whatever else they wanted, they simply stopped responding to me.
So, what did I do? Well, honestly, since I've got 9 recessed LEDs on the circuit that is being controlled by this dimmer, even at 85% brightness it is still daylight-bright in my kitchen. So, I just wrote an automation that monitors the brightness setting of the switches and any time it is adjusted above 85%, I knock it back down to 85%.
Works fine, and was much easier to do than dealing with support would have been.
Best of luck!

Hello @Solla-topee
I am having the same issue as above:
- Master switch works correctly, no issues.
- Satellite switch will turn lights on but will not turn them off.
- Satellite switch brightness adjustment does not function while at max brightness.
- When setting the brightness to 75% in the app satellite switch works correctly, however if you use the satellite switch to increase brightness it will stop working.
Observations With Satellite Switch at Max Brightness:
- Switch will randomly succeed to turn lights off if pressed quickly many times.
- Switch seems to have higher chance of success turning the light off if given a longer press.
- Switch will, somewhat consistantly, turn lights off when pressing the brightness up button.
Troubleshooting Info:
- Switched, one at a time, both master and satellite switch with another KS230KIT which was working fine. Problem persisted in the same way.
- These switches are replacing an existing dumb 3 way dimmer, wiring is all correct.
- Hardware Version 1.0 / Firmware Version 1.0.14
- Switches are powering two chandeliers with a total of x12 40W Incadencent E12 bulbs.
- Satellite switch works correctly when unscrewing 8 of 12 bulbs.
My Analysis:
Satellite switch stops working when the circuit reaches a certain wattage. When wattage is reduced either by dimming or unscrewing bulbs the switch works correctly.
I am going to be replacing all twelve 40W bulbs with 4W LED bulbs, hopefully this resolves my issue.
TP-Link needs to release a fix for this problem, not sure if it's a firmware update or an actual hardware issue that needs to be RMA'd.
UPDATE 1:
- Got a response from TPLink stating the the max wattage for incadencet bulbs for these switches is 300W, I was at 480W.
- Replaced the incadecent bulbs with LED 4W bulbs and switch is functioning correctly.
- New problem has been noticed. On the both satellite switches, the circle LED indicator light that comes on when the lights are off is on permanantly and will not turn off under any condition. Waiting on a response from TPLink on this new issue.
UPDATE 2:
- TPLink has informed me that the LED indicator on the satellite switch is always on by design. This honestly comes across as a failiure in engeneering, no other Kasa 3 way switch behaves this way. Hopefully this can be resolved with a firmware update in the future.
