Model: Deco BE63
Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version: 1.1.7

The only way I can get my Tesla Wall Connector Gen3 (tesla home charger) to connect is by using custom WiFi encryption for 2.4 and 5ghz and setting it to WPA2 on my deco mesh WiFi 7 BE63 network.

Why can't this router auto negotiate with the Tesla wall connector when set to default encryption? This is definitely a firmware flaw as I've never had any other router do this while set to mixed WPA2/WPA3 personal which is supposedly the default on this router for 2.4 and 5ghz?

I would like to avoid having to use custom WiFi encryption settings... very annoying.

Okay, I understand that you're having trouble connecting your Tesla Wall Connector Gen3 to your Deco Mesh Wi-Fi 7 BE63 network when using the default WPA2/WPA3 mixed encryption setting. You can only get it to connect by manually setting the Wi-Fi encryption to WPA2 for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, and you find this inconvenient.

To address this, here are some important points and steps you can follow to adjust your Deco Mesh Wi-Fi settings:

1. Open the Deco APP and go to MORE > Wi-Fi settings.
    • Here, you can edit your main network's SSID and password for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands.
    • In the 'Advanced' menu, you can change the main network encryption method (such as WPA3, WPA2, or WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode).
    • You can also configure which frequencies are available (2.4GHz, 5GHz, or both), and choose whether to hide the SSID.
    • By default, Deco uses the same SSID for both bands. If you want to separate them, you can disable the 2.4GHz option for the main network and use a 2.4GHz-only IoT network or Guest network instead. This will give the 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks different names.

2. For advanced Deco models (like Deco X50 or Wi-Fi 7 models):
    • You can select the channel width for the 5GHz band (80MHz/160MHz/240MHz) in the Advanced menu. Higher channel widths provide better performance but may be more susceptible to interference. We recommend leaving this at default unless you have a specific requirement.
    • Please note, all Deco units in your network must support this feature for the option to appear in the app.

3. For Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 models:
    • You'll see additional settings for the 6GHz network and, for Wi-Fi 7 models, a section for MLO (Multi-Link Operation).

4. Troubleshooting device compatibility:
    • Some devices, especially IoT or smart home products, may not support WPA3 or WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode and will only connect with WPA2. This is a limitation of the device itself, not necessarily a flaw in the Deco firmware. If your Tesla Wall Connector Gen3 cannot connect with WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode, it's likely due to its Wi-Fi chipset not supporting WPA3 or mixed authentication.
    • For best compatibility, set your Deco network encryption to WPA2/WPA-PSK if you have devices that do not support WPA3.

5. Additional resources:

If you would like to avoid using custom Wi-Fi encryption settings, we recommend contacting Tesla support to confirm if your Wall Connector Gen3 supports WPA3 or WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode. Otherwise, using WPA2/WPA-PSK is the most reliable option for maximum compatibility.
