Tapo Skill issue in Alexa Routine (not activating person detection based triggers)
This is a query, I don't know if the issue is with Amazon Alexa or my setup.
As of Tuesday @ ~ 5:45p EST time, none of my person detection based routines in Alexa are triggering.
I've checked the Tapo app and the cameras are correctly flagging and recording person detected events, but the Amazon Echo Routines are no longer activating.
I currently use 3 C113 cameras as very smart motion detectors in public areas of my house. We have 3 cats and neither motion detectors nor presense sensors worked as they get everywhere; these cameras were THE perfect solution, until now. Using the cameras allowed me to have lights (and other devices like aroma machines, air purifiers, TVs, etc.) turn on/off automatically depending on detecting or not detecting a human being in the room, ignoring the cats' motion entirely. This is a big deal to me. I only use LED based lights throughout my home and this has still managed to cut my electricity bill (significantly enough) vs. depending on motion and presense sensors which no matter how finely tuned, would trigger at times due to the cats and their shenanigans.
So my question is for other Tapo users and Tapo (if someone there is reading this).
Kit:
3x C113 cameras connected through H500 Homebase.
I will attempt to pull 1 camera from the Homebase to see if there's any effect, although again, I made no changes to anything.

Hi,
Please ensure you can control the Tapo cameras remotely in the Tapo app. Then, try disabling the Tapo skill and re-enabling it in the Alexa app to see if this helps.

Good Morning,
The Tapo skills otherwise work and yes the cameras can be controlled and viewed remotely. The only thing affected to my knowledge right now seems to be the person detection routines triggering based on the cameras.
I have tried:
1. Disabling/Unlinkiny and re-linking the Tapo Skill
2. Checking the Tapo cameras to make sure they are enabled in Alexa.
3. Double checking the routines and cameras used in them.
4. Deleting and re-creating a routine, for testing purposes.
5. Rebooting every Echo device in the home.
6. Rebooting and then power cycling all my Tapo cameras.
7. Double checking Tapo settings (person detection is and has been enabled)
Thanks.

I have the same problem with my Tapo cameras not triggering Alexa rountines. It hasn't worked since I downloaded the latest Alexa app update on 17 Jan 2026. I have reported the problem to both Tapo and Alexa tech support. Both had me go through a number of troubleshooting tests and reboots/resets of all the associated equipment. Nothing has restored the triggering of Alexa routines. The Tapo cameras alert within the Tapo app. The Alexa routines will work if I manually trigger them inside of the Alexa app. Waiting for both Tapo and Alexa tech support to coordinate on a fix.

Thanks for speaking up. I almost thought it was a me thing although I do see some folks over in Reddit with issues as well.
I've also written to Amazon and Tapo. Amazon is squaring the blame fully at Tapo, whoever is answering me there won't even consider taking the time to investigate. Tapo says they can't recreate the issue themselves because testing shows that the information is going to Amazon and they are trying to deal with Amazon but Amazon hasn't gotten back to them. It feels more like an Amazon issue but atm they are both pointing at each other, basically so I guess we will just have to wait it out.
For the time being I have gone back to using my presence sensors and motion detectors, which has my cats triggering lights at 4am but oh well, lol.
If a fix doesn't happen within the next few weeks I am considering turning off Alexa+ (if it can be done, I'm assuming it can be done) because I do think that's the integration that broke some of the routines in general. I had early access and this never happened but it seemed to occur when they did the general rollout and updated the app in January, as you said.
Please update this if you get any momentum on a fix. I will too.

@Tyraelos Amazon/Alexa customer service had me upgrade to Alexa + as part of their troubleshooting checklist. It made no difference, so I went back to regular Alexa. I also kept calling every few days until they - in their words - escalated the issue- to their engineers and gave me a trouble ticket number. I gave them a detailed synopsis of everything. That's when they started calling me every few days to give me updates. So far the updates are only that they are still working on it - the latest that they assigned their Tapo expert to the pronl. Meanwhile I gave Tapo tech my AmazonAlexa ticket number and urged them to coordinate a fix.
A year ago, the same exact thing happened with my Ring Cameras and never was fixed. That is when I got rid of all my Ring cameras and installed Tapo. Worked great until the Alexa app update a few weeks ago. If Amazon doesn't fix this, I am going to replace the Ecjo with a Google device.

@Runner61627
That's pretty thorough!
I wish I could walk away from Amazon/Echo/Alexa that easily, but it’s nowhere near that simple for me. I’ve got a ton of smart home devices, and my Alexa Routines basically glue them all together (like a bargain‑bin version of Matter, lol). I started dabbling with Home Assistant, but I’m too lazy to go deep into it and needing a subscription for remote access is a deal‑breaker. I’m not adding another monthly fee just to mess with my lights while I'm away from home. So right now I’ve got Eufy, SmartThings, Tapo, Tuya/SmartLife, and probably a few others I’m forgetting, all playing nicely only because Alexa ties them together.
Google is still missing too many features for me to switch, although I haven’t messed with mine recently, so maybe they’ve improved. I rely heavily on announcements, reminders, and routines that trigger off specific words or phrases. Rebuilding all of that would be a nightmare. For example, I still can’t get Google to announce when a person is detected, when the doorbell rings, or when a door opens or closes, things Alexa handles without breaking a sweat.
I totally get why you’d want to walk away, though. And honestly, I’m convinced this issue is on Amazon’s side. It wouldn’t be the first time, and it definitely won’t be the last. They never admit fault. Whenever something breaks, they blame the skill developer, and then magically, weeks or months later, everything works again. If the whole AWS fiasco hadn’t been so big and public, I’m sure they would’ve gaslit everyone affected.
At this point, I can’t return my Tapo cameras, so all I can do is wait and hope they fix it. You’ve gone above and beyond by setting them both up under the same ticket. Now we just have to see whether Amazon gets around to resolving it sooner or later.
Thanks again!

I have continued to troubleshoot the issue of Alexa routines not being triggered by Tapo Cameras. Upon further testing, MOTION detection of my Tapo cameras triggers Alexa routines and the routine works flawlessly. It is PERSON detection that although works within the TAPO app, does not trigger Alexa routines. I have had my Tapo cameras and Alexa routines set up for PERSON detection only. As I reported earlier, this worked for a year up until I updated the Alexa app on 17 June 2026.
I updated both Tapo and Alexa tech support. Hope this helps them narrow down the problem

@Runner61627
That is correct. It's Person Detection that doesn't work. I only use the Person Detection because as I mentioned, my cats are what I'm trying to avoid triggering my devices. I was very clear to them (Tapo and Amazon) that it is Person Detection in the routine that is affected.
I also discovered that there are more affected integrations.
I have a routine that pairs opening a door (using a wyze contact sensor) with turning my Tapo Dimmer on and setting the brightness to 25% for use as a "night light", then turning it off after 30s whenever I go to bed late. Our room is pitch black when we sleep. Anyway, I'd been going to bed earlier than the trigger time for the last few weeks. Last night/this morning however I did go to bed on the latish side and the routine triggers, but the Light Switch wasn't affected at all. I tried running the skill manually to test and saw it in the activity list every time, but the Light Switch had no response. Also checked otherwise to make sure the switch is working from Alexa and Tapo and it is.
So, it looks like more is broken than I suspected. I disabled and re-linked the Tapo skill again (this has been about the 4th time) but this hasn't helped.

I was only using the PERSON detection to trigger Alexa routines as well. I've temporarily (hopefully) set the routines for motion detection.
I did receive a email from Amazon subsequent to updating them today.
Here's the cut/paste:
This is Viji from Amazon Customer Service. Hope this email finds you in good health.
Thank you so much for taking the time to conduct further troubleshooting and providing us with these detailed findings, Ron. Your effort in identifying the specific issue is truly appreciated and incredibly helpful!
I completely understand how frustrating this must be, especially since your Alexa routines with Tapo camera PERSON detection worked perfectly for a year before the app update on June 17, 2026.
**Summary of your findings:**
✓ **MOTION detection** - Works flawlessly and triggers Alexa routines successfully
✗ **PERSON detection** - Works within the Tapo app but does NOT trigger Alexa routines
- Issue started after Alexa app update on June 17, 2026
- Previously worked without issues for one year
This is excellent information that will help our technical team pinpoint the root cause. The fact that motion detection works but person detection doesn't strongly suggests this is related to the recent Alexa app update affecting the integration between Alexa and Tapo's person detection feature.
