Model: RE450
Hardware Version: V3
Firmware Version: 1.0.1 EU (190124)

Hello,

as the title says, I'm currently experiencing issues with my WiFi range extender.

I have a FTTH internet connection in my house, issued by Vodafone Italy. The modem I'm using is their latest one, the vodafone wi-fi 6 station. I've been using the internet connection without any issues for roughly 1 month, but last week I decided to buy a range extender since my room is not really close to the modem and it has a few walls in the way that weaken the 5GHz signal by a lot.

I installed the RE450 in the best position I could, about 9 meters away from the modem and with no obstacles between the two. I also installed the latest firmware as the instructions suggested. After a few days of usage, I noticed that both my 2.4GHz and 5GHz wifi signals coming from the RE450 were losing internet connection for 10-15 seconds a couple of times per hour. At first I thought it was my computer's network card, but a few hours after, my roommate and I decided to do some pc gaming and we were both disconnected at the same time from the game lobby for roughly 15 seconds. I've never experienced this small outages when directly connected to the modem, even though the signal from the RE450 is much stronger than the one I get from the modem.

I also tried resetting the RE450 but the issue occurred shortly after anyway.

My pc and the RE450 are only separated my a wooden door so I highly doubt that's the issue. Has anyone experienced this issue? Is there a way to fix it or I should ask Amazon for a replace?

Thank you in advance

EDIT: My RE is connected to the modem via 2.4 and 5 GHz connection but tweaking this won't fix the issue, I did some tests and the RE keeps disconnecting regardless of the way it's connected to the modem

@Matt_Mo @hakgu

Hello,
For everyone who met similar or same problem, as this thread is pretty very old,  we recommend you to open a new thread to describe the issue on your range extender so we could notice the issue faster and provide assistance:

1. Confirm your range extender is on the latest firmware  (select hardware version first to check available firmware)

https://www.tp-link.com/support/download/re450/

2. Check the LED Status on range extender when the extender lose Internet connection:

Case1:  If Wi-Fi LEDs are still ON on Range Extender when the issue happens:

Try to turn on DHCP Server on the range extender, and set up a smaller IP range for it within router's subnet as instruction (Method 1 ) below ( oe see photo below ):

https://www.tp-link.com/support/faq/2965/

Case2:  If WiFi LEDs goes OFF, please make sure router's Wifi signal is stable first.

Turn off router's advanced wireless settings like WiFi optimizing/ Band- steering or Smart Connect or Whole-Home Wi-Fi / Access control or Parental Control like this thread:

Fix Unstable Connection on the Range Extender by Changing Router Advanced Features

https://community.tp-link.com/en/home/forum/topic/271832

Locate RE closer to router and see if RE LED goes off or not.

If the issue persists, open a new thread and let us know the Model of router, the Led status on RE when issue happens, when did you buy the RE and how long it has been working with the same router, thank you.

Good day,

Thanks a lot for your time and patience.

May I know the exact model number for your Vodafone Wi-Fi 6 modem?

When the connection dropped, would the 2.4ghz and 5ghz turn off or start blinking?

Have you tried to enable the high speed mode on the RE450 to have a look:

https://www.tp-link.com/support/faq/2479/

 If possible, please also try to adjust the wireless channel no the main router, such as channel 11 for 2.4ghz, channel 48 for 5ghz;

And when the internet connection dropped, what did you do to recover the connection, reboot the RE450, or it would come back automatically after a few second?

Moreover, have you noticed when the internet dropped, were you still connected to the RE450, but no internet, or the wireless connection has been disconnected already;

Thank you very much.

@Solla-topee thank you for your answer.

1) The exact model name of the modem is RHG3006

2) I will have to check further because I only checked the led lights twice but as far as I noticed they were still on, they didnt turn off nor started blinking

3) I have tried to enable high speed mode but that doesnt fix it, it just makes my connection slower (If i use high speed I'll get around 80 mbits in download while if I connect the RE to the modem via both 2.4 and 5GHz I'll get up to 300 mbits)

4) The RE automatically reconnects without me having to do anything. It's just annoying that I'll get disconnected for roughly 15 seconds.

5) When the signal drops, both 2.4 and 5GHz wifi's are still visible and I'm still able to connect to them. However, when I opened my wifi settings on my windows PC it was saying "No internet connection"

I have just routed the 2.4 ghz and the 5ghz signal from my modem to channel 11 and 48 respectively, as you suggested. I will keep you updated on wether this solves the issue or not.

Best regards.

I have the exact same issue with my new RE450. I had a RE200 on the same position, but due to relocating my desk it was not sufficient. It did however never lose internet connection, but now that I've replaced it with the RE450 it keeps disconnecting multiple times per hour. I haven't checked blinking lights, but in order to fix the issue I have to reset the RE450, it doesn't reconnect automatically...

@Solla-topee The issue just occured again, regardless of the channels change.

@Solla-topee I've just experienced it on my phone as well. As you can see from the first screenshot, I'm getting "No connection" while connected to the 2.4 GHz signal of my RE450. I immediately switched to my router's wifi and immediately got internet connection again, so the issue is definitely on the range extender. Hopefully you can help me with my issue.

@Koekenbakker

Good day,

Did you have RE450 v2, or V3?

If it is V2, please try to update the firmware to be the latest one: RE450(EU)_V2__200914

https://static.tp-link.com/2020/202010/20201014/RE450(V2)_200914.zip

By the way, what is the model number of your home router?

When the connection dropped, are you still connected to the Wi-Fi but no internet, or it has already been disconnected?

If it Is connected but no internet, could you please help me check the IP address and default gateway on the device?

Since you mentioned only reset could fix the issue, would unplugging and plugging RE450 back temporally recover the connection?

Thank you very much.

@Solla-topee :

On 2.4 GHz it disconnects the WIFI entirely, on 5GHz it loses internet connection, but stays connected to the WIFI.

I checked during the reconnect, right before:

en0: flags=8863<UP,BROADCAST,SMART,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
    ether 38:f9:d3:b2:7f:ab
    inet6 fe80::106e:d789:e479:bdab%en0 prefixlen 64 secured scopeid 0xa
    inet 192.168.178.13 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.178.255
    nd6 options=201<PERFORMNUD,DAD>
    media: autoselect
    status: active

After reconnecting however it looks that the IP of my laptop changed from 192.168.178.13 to 192.168.178.12.

en0: flags=8863<UP,BROADCAST,SMART,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
    ether 38:f9:d3:b2:7f:ab
    inet6 fe80::106e:d789:e479:bdab%en0 prefixlen 64 secured scopeid 0xa
    inet 192.168.178.12 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.178.255
    nd6 options=201<PERFORMNUD,DAD>
    media: autoselect
    status: active

So it seems that I got handed out a new IP address whilst this thing was going on.

The default gateway is 192.168.178.1, which is a TP-Link Acher C50. The RE450 is version 3 and runs on 192.168.178.11. To clarify: I've set DHCP server off, cause I want the Archer C-50 to hand out ip addresses.

Unplugging will fix the issue for 5GHz, it doesn't come back automatically, for 2.4GHz the connection comes back by itself usually..
