Model: TL-WPA8630P KIT
Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version: 2.0.3

Hi

For some crazy reason this little box, which should be acting as wireless point, has decided that it's going to be the DHCP server for the network. I don't want this.

And I can't see how to turn it off, it's on a static IP and there are do DHCP settings anywhere to click on.

Help please.

Simlar to this post. Only mine is already on a static IP

For anyone, like me, that didn't belive that this would become a DHCP server - as that's an insane design decision

@a-hawk

Hello, theoretically, the powerline adpater won't work as a DHCP server unless the main DHCP server failed due to the smart DHCP feature. In this way, to access the TL-WPA8630, the IP will be assigned by the adapter when main DHCP server lost connection.

Meanwhile, there is no DHCP server option existed; it uses static IP as LAN IP type, it should be fine.

Besides, may I know does it affect the actual performance of the powerline adapters? And does the main router work well in the meantime?

Good day.

@Kevin_Z

Thanks Kevin

A couple of things I think...

So are you confirming it does start it's own DHCP server as everyone else at TP link has told me it doens't do that?

Let's assume it does, because that's what I've seen.

Imagine rebooting everything at once e..g powercut

1) TPlink starts it's DHCP server before the DHCP server had booted. A race condition

2) It starts giving out IPs through it's DHCP server to desktops, essentially knocking them off the network as it couldn't provide any DNS or router settings

I don't think anything should start it's own DHCP server without being asked to - there should be a tickbox to turn this off.

I'll have to set it static but it would be better if it could get it's IP through DHCP, so I can manage the network in one place,  but not start it's own server

Many thanks for coming back to me.

@Kevin_Z

OpenWRT has an option to back-off its DHCP server in case it detects another one. This is on by default. So DHCP does not work in case of an OpenWRT default configuration. Took me some time to figure that out. In addition, the adapter spams the link with DHCP requests:

IPV4
UDP
192.168.12.132:68
192.168.12.1:67
9.66 MB (30738 Pkts.)

Please fix the firmware. Your smart DHCP feature is not that smart.

@a-hawk

(Up)

After a power outage, the TL-WPA8630P DHCP server sometimes kicks in before the main router DHCP server does.

The TL-WPA8630P DHCP server thus allocates IPs to a number of devices which will be and remain UNABLE to access the Internet.

Which results in a broken iOT network.

This TL-WPA8630P DHCP server work mode is sleazy and unacceptable.

When will Tp-link provide a new firmware version which optionally allows for the use of the TL-WPA8630P DHCP server to be disabled?

Best.

@Kevin_Z

Im having similiar issues with the TL-WPA4226 Kit, comeing up with a DHCP-Server which causes all devices on the Network to have connection issues. Will there be a fix soon?

@TP-Link Could I get the same information, pllease? I've just spent a frustrating hour trying to diagnose my internet connection caused by the exact race condition others have mentioned. I would really like to disable the DHCP server entirely as there's no guarantee the devices will come up in the "right" order. (also, as cool as it is, it is an obnoxious feature if it can't be disabled)
