Troubleshooting What if my Router Speed is capped at 100 Mbps?

This Article Applies to:
TP-Link Routers
Issue Description/Phenomenon:
Some customers may report the speed is limited to 100 Mbps when connected to the TP-Link router, while the speed is much faster and can reach up to 500+ or 900+ Mbps when connecting to the ISP modem directly. If this is what you are experiencing, follow this article to get it resolved.
Troubleshooting Suggestions:
1. Mark certain you are getting a gigabit router, which has gigabit WAN/LAN ports. Some models like Archer C20 and Archer C50 only support 10/100 Mbps WAN/LAN ports, you can find that in the product specifications here and here. If your router only has 10/100 Mbps WAN/LAN ports, you cannot get a higher speed than 100 Mbps, and you need to get a gigabit router.
2. Login to the web GUI of the router, go to Basic > Network Map > click on the Icon for TP-Link router, slide down to the bottom of the page, and you will see the Negotiation Speed of the Ethernet ports in the Ethernet part. You can refer to this article to find more detailed instructions.
3. If the Internet Port Negotiation Speed is not 1000Mbps, go to Advanced > Network > Internet page, choose 1000Mbps Full Duplex, save and reboot the router:
4. If it's still connected at 100 Mbps, try with another Cat5e/6 cable or change the port of your ISP device, where you're connecting the TP-Link router (if possible).
5. If the Internet speed is negotiated correctly at 1000 Mbps, but the LAN gets stuck at 100 Mbps, it is also suggested to try with another Cat5e/6 cable between the router LAN and the client device, try with another client device if that is possible. Follow this thread to troubleshoot further.
6. Try to reset the router to the default factory following the FAQ.
7. Upgrade the router firmware to the latest. You can follow this guide.
If the speed still gets stuck at 100 Mbps after checking all the above, it is suggested to comment below and be sure to provide the following information:
1. Model number, hardware, and firmware version of your TP-Link Router.
2. What troubleshooting have you done, and what are the results? Send us the screenshots about the Negotiation speed.
3. What are the devices that you are testing the LAN speed, and what are the models of the adapters?
4. When did you purchase the TP-Link router, and when did the issue begin to happen?
5. What is the model of the ISP modem that this TP-Link router connects to?

I just can´t get the speed i pay for on this router..I got Fiber 1000/1000 connection but when i connect to the TP router i lose 150-200Mbps.
How did you test the speed? Did you run a speed test on one of the three wired devices?
When conducting the speed test, please ensure there is no high-traffic usage on the network, including both wired and wireless devices.
Have you enabled the QoS feature for any devices or services? If so, please ensure it is correctly configured based on the bandwidth provided by your ISP.
If none of the above helps, please try resetting the AX73 to factory defaults and reconfiguring it from scratch, then connecting only one computer to its LAN port to test the real speed.

@Kevin_Z Connected via CAT 6 and the Internet Option is Locked at 100mbps despite setting it to 1000mbps full duplex. When Connecting the Same through ISP to Laptop via the cable ignoring the router getting full speed. TP link customer Service is clueless they can't find any solution.
@DEBASISHMONDAL Please try my suggestions for VictorServellon, such as changing the Cat 6 cables, testing with other LAN ports on your ISP modem.
BTW, what is the specific model number of your ISP modem? How about the hardware and firmware version of the Archer C6?
Please also try resetting the C6 to factory defaults and reconfiguring it from scratch, then checking if the Internet port can be negotiated at a proper speed.

@Kevin_Z 1.0.16 Build 20230828 rel.44667
Already factory reset but nothing happened. Bought new Cat 6 cable which gave full speed when directly connected it to Laptop via ISP but speed capped at 100mbps when connected via Router WAN port

If that is the case, we recommend reaching out to the local tech support, so they can work with you in looking into the issue further or help with the replacement:

I have the same problem with my Archer AX72. After turning on the computer, sometimes I get 1000 Mb/s and sometimes 100 Mb/s. I have a new Cat. 6 cable. Interestingly, if I put the computer to sleep at 100 Mb/s and then wake it up, I get 1000 Mb/s again. What's causing this? Is it the router, the cable, or the computer's motherboard?

Hello @Pawel8 ,
Welcome to our community.
I think it's best that you focus on one post to ask questions. In this way, we can focus on the information to locate the problem encountered by your device.
For your situation, please compare different devices to see if they have the same problem.
Is the PC connected by wire? If so, please connect directly to the front-end modem for comparison.

Yes, I have my desktop computer connected via Ethernet cable. Since I get 1000 Mbps every time I connect it directly to the Huawei modem, but I have to manually enter my login details, I changed my approach a bit:
- I bought a new cable,
- I reinstalled Windows on my desktop computer,
- I connected my desktop computer to a different port (LAN1) on the AX72,
- I connected my laptop to LAN4.
Results:
After about 30 restarts, the laptop still works at 1000 Mbps (on both cables).
- The desktop computer negotiates 100 Mbps approximately every 10 restarts, instead of 1000 Mbps (on both cables).
The router is 4 months old. Everything worked fine until I restarted it (after 4 months).
Furthermore, when I force Device Manager from Auto Negotiation to 1000 Mbps, I get about 28% packet loss in the test packetlosstest test. When I set it to Auto and return it back to 1000 Mbps, I get 0% packet loss. What's going on here?

Hello@Pawel8 ,
Thanks for your detailed reply.
From your description, the problem probably started after reinstalling the Windows system on the PC?
1. Connect the PC to different LAN ports of the AX72 for comparison.
2. Please force the LAN port connected to the PC to a negotiation speed of 1000Mbps on the AX72:
Please log in to your router's web management page by visiting: https://tplinkwifi.net
Then, go to Advanced > Internet > Internet Port Negotiation Speed Setting and select "Auto-Negotiation". You can also set the port to "1000Mbps Full Duplex".
If possible, I also suggest you contact PC support to check if the PC settings need to be modified.

@Kevin_Z Hi, i keep having my LAN speed limited at 100 Mbps.
1. AX1800 Dual-Band Wi-Fi 6 Router, hardware located below:
2. I have rebooted the router, reset it to factory settings and bought a cat8 ethernet cable and have enabled the Internet Port Negotiation Speed Setting to 1000Mbps Full Duplex.
3. I am testing it with my pc which has plugged in the AV600 Passthrough Powerline Starter Kit.
4. I purchased the router today and the issue has not gone yet.
5. Model of the ISP modem is DATA FD704G-AE-R410 Single-Fiber 4GE+CATVONU. I checked and it should be having enough bandwith:

Hi,
Please note that all "AV600" Powerline adapters that TP-Link sells are equipped with 100 Mbps Ethernet ports.
Therefore, whatever you plug into an AV600 Powerline adapter will be limited to a 100 Mbps connection.
