Model: Archer A8
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.12.1

Hello! I'm planning to make Mesh System already owning Archer A8. I was planning to extend the network coverage by adding 2 E4 Decos through wireless connection, but have found out that these 3 devices can not be joined together in complete Mesh System (as far as i understood).

I do not have an option of using cables between any of these devices, so i came up with 2 ways of solving this case:

1) EasyMesh system with 3 routers - with Archer A8 as a main one, while next 2 devices (probably something like Archers C86) are connected to each other with 1st one is connected to main one (A8), creating completely wireless chain-like system.
2) Forget about having an Archer A8 (not use it at all) and buy a kit of 3 Deco E4 and also connect them wirelessly with each other.

So the questions are:
1) Is it even possible to get such system where i connect the 2nd "satellite" to the 1st "satellite" and only then the 1st "satellite" to Main Device (Archer or E4 for these cases)? Is it possible to force the 2nd "satellite" to connect to the 1st "satellite" and not the Main Device? As i said before, i'm currently looking for a wireless solution.
2) If there is such possibility of connection what would be the better choice in case of performance (net stability, speed, etc.) if the most important "consumer" devices are located mostly closer to both network "satellite" devices (Archers C86/Decos E4 for case 1/2)?

Thanks in advance.

Hi  @Rawtehr

Can I know what devices you currently have? For example, have you set up an Archer A8 or Deco E4 network?

First, I think I need to make it clear to you that if you want to build a mesh network, it is not recommended to mix Easy mesh-compatible routers and Deco mesh-compatible products.

So, if you already have a deco E4 device, you can consider a higher-spec Deco, such as Deco X50, etc.

As for your idea that the second satellite unit can connect to the signal of the first satellite unit, this is also a function that some deco models have already implemented,

 https://www.tp-link.com/en/support/faq/3480/

select a preferred signal source on deco app.

Please note that the specific models mentioned after ‘This Article Applies to’ are the models that already support this function.

Hello, thank you for the reply.

I have Archer A8 as main router and have recently bought 2 Deco E4 modules thinking it is possible to link them all together in a Mesh system - then realized it is not possible to do so.

So then I came up with 2 ideas how can I configure such net where all of the router devices are connected together wirelessly, with understanding that I will have to use either Decos mesh and forget about my Archer A8 or use my Archer A8 with additional routers such as Archer C86 and try to return Decos back to the electronics store. But I bumped into little details such as "How can I force 2nd satellite to connect wirelessly to the 1st satellite - not to the main router?"

You mentioned that Decos have such ability to choose preferred signal source. I think this is the right function I want to see, but this creates even more questions:

1) From the list in the link I figured out that E4 Deco doesn't allow to use such feature for now. If I purchase for example 1 Deco M4 and use it as 2nd satellite (with keeping E4 as main router and 1st satellite) will the mobile app allow me to choose the preferred signal source for that M4 or do I have to use a kit with all 3 devices being M4 versions?

2) This function is mentioning only Deco devices and doesn't say anything about Easy Mesh. If I decide to choose a system with Easy Mesh 3 routers (not Decos) is it possible to choose preferred signal source for them?

If I understand correctly question I'm trying to solve is called Wireless backhaul or Wi-Fi Uplink AP and in my opinion it creates more questions when it comes to systems with more than 2 routers. I think that these topics also relate to my problem, if it can help:

https://community.tp-link.com/en/home/forum/topic/654874

https://community.tp-link.com/en/home/forum/topic/719238

This also creates a question of net stability as I mentioned before - of course it would be better to use Ethernet but in wireless case what would remain on the 2nd "end" satellite when the signal first have to go through 1st "intermediate" satellite?
Sorry if I use incorrect terminology - I'm not sure if there is a difference between words "node" and "satellite".

Thanks in advance.

Hi  @Rawtehr,

The Archer A8 you purchased already supports the Easymesh function. You can consider purchasing other routers that also support Easymesh to build a mesh network. However, among the devices currently compatible with Easymesh, only the Archer AX55 supports the function of selecting the preferred signal source.

You mentioned that you want to connect Deco to the router wirelessly, but this is not possible at present. Main deco can only be connected to other non-deco routers via Ethernet cable. In the future, it may be possible to connect deco devices to Easymesh routers wirelessly.

If you think the preferred signal source function is important to you, I suggest you return all the new devices and replace them with decos that support the preferred signal source function.

‘Node’ generally refers to a single unit in a mesh network, while ‘satellite’ refers to the unit of the extended network in a mesh network. The corresponding main unit is the unit of the extended network.

For stability, we also recommend that you consider using devices with the same mesh technology to create a network system.

Hello again and thanks for the reply.

I think i got enough answers, but still have some questions left:

1) "You mentioned that you want to connect Deco to the router wirelessly, but this is not possible at present. Main deco can only be connected to other non-deco routers via Ethernet cable. In the future, it may be possible to connect deco devices to Easymesh routers wirelessly."
- If i connect Deco E4 with Archer A8 through Ethernet cable (and then potentially other Decos to that E4) would it create the unite Mesh net - the net with one SSID and with "seamless" connection between all router-devices? From what i read before - this is not achievable (https://www.tp-link.com/ru/support/faq/3749/), but seems like you are trying to say it could be possible.

2) "If you think the preferred signal source function is important to you, I suggest you return all the new devices and replace them with decos that support the preferred signal source function."
- Is it necesarry requirment that Deco mesh has to include ONLY router-device that support feature of preferred signal source (from this list https://www.tp-link.com/en/support/faq/3480/)? What if i bulit system with 2 E4's and 2 M4's (watch the picture)?

Thanks in advance.

  @Rawtehr

Hi, thanks for sharing your concerns.

About your first question, this FAQ is also I want to share with you. It is suggested to only use Decos to set up Deco mesh network currently. As I know, only few Deco models support Easymesh and Deco E4 is a basic model. So comparing to expecting certain features to be added in the future, why not have it work now?

As for your second concern, usually we recommend the Deco model with higher specification works as main Deco and some features do disappear if some Decos in the Deco network do not support them(also related to different network topology). You may refer to this guide to know more.

For the network topology you drew, Deco M4 can choose second Deco E4 as signal source, as Deco M4 support this feature. The client devices can not choose preferred signal source and band, as it requires all Decos in the network support this feature.

However, as you can see, only Deco M4 V4 support to choose preferred signal source. Or V2 following this thread.

BTW, for Deco network with wireless backhaul, whether satellite Deco choose another satellite Deco or main Deco as signal source, it is also related to your network environment, the distance among each Deco and so on. So it is hard to say that satellite Deco will certainly choose main Deco.
