- How to manually Update the Firmware of Deco via web UI.
Q&A
Q: Can I still use HomeCare Features if I didn't update the firmware?
A: If you stay in the original version, previous features will still be accessible through the Deco app. However, these features might no longer receive essential security updates. Therefore, we recommend keeping your firmware up to date to ensure optimal security and performance.
Q: Will previously free-offered features require a subscription after the firmware upgrade?
A: No. After the firmware upgrade, the Basic Parental Control service kit will not only retain the original capabilities of HomeCare Protection but also offer various enhancements in functional interaction, app block, and the richness of statistical data. Users can still enjoy an excellent experience without a subscription.
Q: If I already have an active Advanced Parental Control subscription, Can I use it on Deco M5 instead?
A: Yes. However, there is an exception: if the TP-Link ID also subscribed to Security+ at the same time, then the previous subscriptions can't used on the Deco M5 since its Network Security features are already free.
Q: Will I lose parental control configurations and history records?
A: We will make every effort to retain and migrate user usage records and configurations to the fullest extent possible. However, due to potential discrepancies with the old HomeCare database, some settings might need to be reconfigured. Additionally, since the original firmware utilized less usage data for parental control statistics, the insight history and traffic hours may take some time to accumulate sufficient data before they can be displayed accurately after the firmware upgrade.

@David-TP For Sane, it is a well-known tool on Linux for the record.
And this alert was already here with the first beta. I don't really understand how Sane is so dangerous when searching for scanner on Network, it is an overkill alert IMO. I don't see how a Windows tool which use a network scanner would be less dangerous, it looks like ignorence from TP-Link team, sadely. It would not be difficult to execute an open source tool to see what it does on network but they prefer saying something which is false. Nice!
For a screenshot I only have one alert I did not remove:
Don't trust displayed information which indicate all protection are disabled to understand the issue, I disabled all protection until it becomes realy useful but when this alert was recorded, all protections were active of course.
It looks there are some domains which are added to the list used by TP-Link then these are removed. But as someone or something add these false positive, it makes alerts which let think this list is not really well moderated.

Hi, as this firmware version has introduced the Advanced Parental Control subscription, which is a big improvement, the auto-release proportion is growing slowly.
If you want to install this version, you can manually download from the /en site:

@David-TP is it exactly the same binary as the latest beta we had which has the same release build date?
I am disapointed to see Sane is still considered as a potential malware by TP-Link team when it is an open source software which use known protocols to use network scanners. IMO it makes me trustless to these new securrity rules if this kind of false positive is OK for this security tool. It was realy simple to check the tool to see it is not a malware.

Hi, nice to see you again.
The official 1.8.5 version is the same as the last beta.bin version.
Best regards.

Did you ever get a reply to this question?

@David-TP is it possible to have more precisions about improvments for Network security features? Because I see a lot of changes on parental control but it looks nothing will change for other features I.E. QOS and Network security.
I am personnaly not interested in parental control so is it really useful to test this preview firmware?
I have scanned your conversation with tpdavid and can't find anything.
I'm in the same situation as you, not interrested in parental control or anything.
Network stability and security is always good.
Currently running 1.7.8 Build 20240826 Rel. 62323 and really cannot see any reason to upgrade.
Since you upgraded and ran into problems with false positives and tplink can't give you a straight answer, what do you say?
Best regards

Can this new advanced parental control function block Internet access through randomized MAC addresses? My daughter can bypass ALL parental controls simply by enabling MAC address randomization on her phone or laptop. This overrides parental controls and renders them completely useless.

@Ache I say nothing has changed for me in a positive maner.
I have never been convinced by the previous security features nor by Trendmicro themself and did not think I could be less convinced but PT-Link made it possible unfortunately...
And their ignorence for open source software I.E. Sane definitely convinced me to turn all security features off.
It is only my opinion, I wil NOT say everybody should do the same because we talk about security.
But I realy think false positive are never acceptable, especialy when they are reported. And the fact I have never had any reply about the fact I cannot send logs at all is also a big issue IMO. No reply from support, I don't know why my tickets are NEVER opened!
About Sane: I also sent some piece of Python code to allow TP-link team to reproduce the issue but nobody cares as it seams!
And I have not talked about Google related domains which have sometimes been blocked for some hours for unknown reasons. Fortunately it looks these domains were unblocked after these hours but it is another issue.
Except these changes, I have not noticed anything.
It is now possible to disable QoS when it was not before but I think it is related to the Deco app, not to the M5 firmware.
If I realy want to say there is something new, it could be the new feature to have more information about a device, which transmit its MAC address to a service which wil give you the brand and some other info when available. It can be useful.
EDIT: about Sane, fortunately it did not prevent it to work, which is another strangeness. There is an alert but it works.

That's what I tought. No reason to upgrade the firmware. I think tplink is pushing the upgrade just to get more people buy in on the subscription. The rest is a scam.
I will stay on 1.7.8.
What version of the app are you on?
