Model: Tapo D235
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.1.19

Has anyone else experienced this?

I’ve noticed something unusual and I’m wondering if it’s just me or a possible firmware bug that could be addressed in an update.

Exactly 4 seconds into any video capturing event, I consistently see a glitch or Frame jump, it looks like either a bitrate lag or simply a frame skip. This happens on nearly any video, some frame jumps are harder to capture if the person is not moving.

Here’s what I’ve already tried/checked:

  • Performed a hard reset and re-synced/reset the device.

  • RSSI value: -46

  • Average ping (no timeouts): 22 ms

  • Device set to high performance.

  • Internet: 500 Mbps up / 500 Mbps down.

  • Downloaded the footage and confirmed the glitch is actually recorded, not just a playback issue.

  • Device is a day old fully charged battery, + none of my other cameras do this on the same network

  • Cloud footage, not SD card, 20FPS

Additional observation: when the device wakes, the exposure adjustment feels noticeably slow.

I’m very Tapo-oriented (RV30 arriving tomorrow, can’t wait!). I’ve raised a ticket with support. I’m just curious if anyone else noticed this, or have I stumbled upon a firmware bug that hasn’t been widely reported yet?

Thank you for reading.

Hi Matts95,

We have two D235 doorbells, both running firmware 1.1.19 and we have no such problems with video artifacts or glitches in recordings at around 4 seconds into every recording as far as I can tell from checking multiple recordings.

One thing to note, both of our doorbells have hard-wired power to an existing doorbell wiring circuit, and the batteries sit at 81% full all the time. RSSI values are -53 on one and -57 on the other. As they are hard-wired, we run both in "Always On" mode, so that may be a factor if your devices wake up when triggered?

I hope that support come back to you with some answers or ideas to try soon.

Apolgies for breaking in but I have a question : I have exactly seen setup as yours but there is some lag in receiving notifications either from doorbell press or events.
Are you experiencing the same ?

@ajp558 I think this is the definitive difference, not being wired having to 'wake up'. I just hope its addressable with firmware.

@Wayne-TP I will do, nothing yet!

@Michael_82 Yes I have noticed this, doorbell is pressed, obvioulsy has to wake back up and then notify the phones. The chimes are pretty much instant, but I believe they go through Bluetooth.

Hi Michael,

We find that notifications of doorbell press or events is quite quick and acceptable across the Tapo doorbell sounder, our numerous Alex Show devices in the home and our mobile phones.  Its certainly quick enough to respond to say the postman at the front door and we have been very happy with the hard-wired doorbells and our other Tapo devices which include a C325 camera that is connected over ethernet & powerline rather than wifi (even though we do have a good Asus Mesh wifi network at home).   I think that the sounder responds immediately, the Alex Show devices take about a second (displaying the video shortly thereafter) and our mobile phones receive an alert within a second or two.

I hope that helps.
