Mesh Network Config and Backhaul Question
Mesh Network Config and Backhaul Question
Friday

I live in a 2 storey Strata 3 bed and Study Townhouse, serviced by a FTTN connection - but some 800m from the node - limiting speeds to 28-35 down and 19 up.  I am currently on a 50/20 plan with Aussie Broadband.

Currently, I have an X20-DSL, in the Study - upstairs in the SE corner, together with a X20 satellite in the Snug in NW corner upstairs, and another X20 satellite in the Lounge, downstairs in the NW corner.  All of these Router/Satellites are connected via Cat v6 ethernet cables via a distribution gigabit switch in the Comms Cupboard - downstairs in the Garage - mid North side.  Unmanaged switches are connected at each of the router and satellites and where possible clients/devices are connected vi cable to these.

Our Strata is in the middle of getting an upgrade to FTTP - but the plan shows that the NTD for my Unit will not be located anywhere near where connection to the existing ethernet network is possible.  NTD and new Main Router is to be located in the downstairs SE corner - directly below the existing X20-DSL in the Study - some 3 metres away through the floor.

I have planned to take this opportunity and upgrade to a Wi-Fi 7 Deco system - probably using at least 2 Deco BE65 units plus other models, as required.  Maybe even utilizing some of the X20s in less demanding areas.

An ethernet connection from the new Main Router position to any point on the existing ethernet network will be either very expensive or not possible.

So, I was hoping the following layout and connection would be feasible.  The backhaul connection from the new Main Router (BE65) to the Node in the Study (BE65), 3 metres directly through the floor, would have to be wireless.   At this point in the Study, connection to the existing ethernet network would be possible and thus the rest of the backhaul to other satellites would then be possible via ethernet cable.

I was planning on moving to a 500/50 plan if all this works out.

Is this possible and what problems might be generated ?

First timer on this forum and appreciate any assistance....

Hi, welcome to the community.

Take the following picture for example:

The expected topology would work well:

FTTP NTD----New Main Deco BE65-----<WiFi>------satellite Deco#1-----Ethernet Switch-----satellite Deco#2

                                                                                                                                              \------satellite Deco#3

For the above topology, both "satellite Deco X20#2" and "old Deco X20-DSL" might be possible to play the role of "satellite Deco#1". The final candidate might depend on the distance and physical barriers(walls, doors, etc.). Usually, "satellite Deco X20#2" might be the winner.

Deco X20-DSL can also be used as a satellite Mesh unit, but if you plan to purchase a two-pack Deco BE65, the second BE65 is suggested to replace the "satellite Deco X20#2".

Thank you very much.

Best regards.

  @Badger16

Thank you David-TP for considering my issue

My original concern was the degradation of the wireless signal/backhaul that might be expected between the Main Deco (BE65) that will be located ajacent to the FTTP NTP and a satellite replacing the old X20-DSL directly above - through the floor.

Is it correct that your layout does not have a satellite located where the old X20_DSL was ?    Most of my WF7 devices will live in this area - and it would be the closest point where connection to the exising gigabit ethernet distribution around the house is possible.

Please be aware that location of your designated satellite Deco X20#2 is on the lower floor - some 7 metres away from the new Main Deco - through an angled wall.

Also 90% of my devices requiring Wi-Fi are located upstairs adjacent to satellite Deco X20#1 and location of old X20-DSL.    Over 70% of all my devices will be connected via etherenet.

Sorry to change part way through - but I am probably not going to re-use the X20s - instead go all out on Wi-Fi 7 hardare - and use 2 x BE65 plus BE25 for any additional satellites. required.

Your revised recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again
