No, it is not necessary. You should be able to update to the 1.7.0 beta directly from the official 1.6.2. Firmware Recovery is only needed when you plan to downgrade from 1.7.0 to 1.6.2.
Best regards.

Hello David,
I have noticed recently that after restarting my DECO's - MAIN M5(3.2) 1.7.8 Build 20240719 Rel. 70981 with three Satellite S4(2.0) 1.6.2 Build 20240718 Rel. 69205 - that the Connection Preference screen is clearly available for a minute or so after reboot under each connected device and I can navigate the options in the screen, all DECO's are available within the selector screen, I can select the Preferred Deco I want, save it and it shows as saved (in the shot below the main M5 is the living room and the connected device is saved to one of the S4 V2's) the Deco moves that device to the relevant S4 but then after a minute or so when you click back out to home screen and back into devices the Connection Preference option is magically gone again and the functionality is hobbled once more. This infers the functionality is there in code but is removed via config shortly after reboot. This is extremely frustrating given how much back and forth there has been around this. Can you please get a proper answer from your dev teams as to what this means and why that functionality is clearly there, functions but is then removed shortly after reboot. I think we'd all appreciate an honest answer here at this stage.
Thank you

@David-TP Please let us know when will receive the official release, those of us who have the M4 as an access point, need to be able to disable DHCP, this is 100000% necessary because it is failing, we cannot let months go by without answers to customers, we are losing confidence in the brand....

Hi, Thank you very much for your time and patience.
Deco S4_V2_1.6.2 Build 20240718 Rel. 69205 still doesn't support "Connection Preference" yet. I think it is due to the APP cookies that you could configure this feature temporarily.
It is quite like the issue reported here:https://community.tp-link.com/en/home/forum/topic/612014?replyId=1217126
If you want to manually set the Connection Preference for Deco S4_V2, it is still suggested to install the beta firmware first.
Thanks again and best regards.

Hi David, the problem with using that Beta firmware (1.5.1 for the S4) is that it is very old now and is missing some of the key recent security updates. In fact having some awareness of the current level of security threats out there I find it very worrying that TP Link are recommending people use these older firmwares as it clearly puts people's devices at risk. I would strongly recommend users keep their firmware up to date to best protect their home network and I would have thought that TP Link would also recommend the same.
