Model: HS105
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version:

Hi,

I bought an Amazon Echo Dot 3rd Gen, that included a Kasa plug.

All my old plugs were HS103, and I noticed this one is HS105.

What's the difference?

@danielcifuentes

Their functions are almost same, compared with HS105, only lower the max load to 10A;

Their appearance has some changes; the HS103 uses the grey button, HS105 uses white;

Besides, the HS103 is cheaper than HS105.

Best regards.

It is related to the appliance plugged into the HS103, the max load will be lower than the HS105;

While it can satisfy the common devices request to power them up.

Good day.

@danielcifuentes

A basic question : What does the Max Load mean for these two smart plug siblings?  Thanks!

@PeteChin

I'm guessing the most common use is lighting products, but it can make a big difference if it's switching a motor. In lighting, which is most widely known to consumers, 5 Amps is equal to 600 watts of a traditional incandescent light bulb (these are 120V). If you are nearing that 5amp difference on a motor, it could be a problem. But I personally can't think of a motor you'd use a smart plug with that would be a problem unless it's a very large fan you want to control from a smart phone. Maybe a space heater? Anyway, hopefully this helps a bit get you an idea in your head on what to watch out for. I have the smaller 10a running all of my Christmas lights and it's fine. But I agree, just keep the 15 amp to eliminate one product and problems for consumers. Must have been to compete against a less expensive, similar product.

The simple answer is that if you route more current than is allowed it may damage (melt or fuse) the internal relay of the switch. Best case it's fused on and can't be shut off anymore. Worst case it catches fire and your insurance won't pay because you exceeded the switch rating. Routing engine loads (fans, ACs, etc) isn't a good idea as the current often spikes when they start up which may ruin/fuse the switch's relay - it'll stick on. Stick to loads that don't exceed the maximum rating.
