Model: Tapo C200
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.1.7

Hi folks. I recently got a Tapo C200 on sale for monitoring our chicken coop. Everything is working fine except both LQ and HQ options are streaming the same low resolution -  640x480 only. The HQ option shows the image with a 4:3 aspect ratio while LQ simply stretches the same lo-res image to 16:9.

Is there a way to override this and get a 1080 image or is this completely automated in the camera by the wifi signal strength?

Thanks in advance for any insight!

@Solla-topee

Thanks for getting back with some ideas. I have resolved the problem, basically by doing a full reset using the reset button on the camera.

While searching for a solution I did note a connection with this problem and accessing the camera and changing resolution settings through other software via ONVIF protocol. For example, when trying to switch between video quality options using the Synology Surveillance Station, the image switches to LQ 640x480 in the Tapo App as well and I am unable to change it back to HQ in the Tapo App. Strange because in the SSS the setting is to use whatever the camera settings are (via Tapo App).

In any case, all is working now after a hard reset, so for me the problem has been resolved.

Best regards.

@tb68 Thank you so much! A hard reset did restore the HQ resolution and aspect ratio for me.

I do use Synology Surveillance Station too. A pattern emerges...

Update: A better solution is to adjust the resolution at Stream Profile in Synology Surveillance Station.

@tb68 Good day,

Thanks for your photos and detailed post. If you watch Live view on a different mobile device in HQ, will live view page adjust the page to full screen?

To locate the problem, can you help confirm some details :

  • Model of mobile phone & its Android/ IOS version:
  • Tapo app Version:(make sure its the latest version)
  • Did you recently update the tapo APP or firmware  for camera, did Live view page look the same on HQ before ?

@Solla-topee

Hi, and thanks very much for the quick response.

I have an iPhone Xs Max running iOS 14.5 with latest Tp-Link Tapo App version 2.3.29.

I also have a Tapo C310 which send a 3MP image to this same iPhone with no issues and little lag. In the settings menu for the C310 there is an option for choosing the resolution of the video. This option is not present for the C200.

Streaming the video to another app via RSTP does not give 1080 either. In fact, I have yet to see true 1080 from this C200.

I was prompted to update the firmware upon setup so I did this. Therefore, I cannot compare with other firmware versions.

I will try to move the wifi access point closer and see if that helps. If you have any other suggestions I'd appreciate it.

@tb68 Hello,

Thank you for your reply. You could try a different mobile device if you have one and see if video quality improves when set to HQ on a different mobile device.

 To address the issue and try to fix it, we would like to have a specialist look into this further via email  -subject with forum ID  '   263508  '. Please check your mailbox later, and let us know if the issue is resolved, thank you.

@tb68 Have you found a fix? I have the same issue with both of my C100 and C200.

@ygdrasil Yes, a hard reset unfortunately, but it solved the problem. See my message #6 marked as a solution. Cheers.

@ygdrasil Hello,

May I know did you also use any 3rd party software/ NVR to change the resolution for camera before?

If so you could change the resolution back or reset the camera as suggested by @tb68
