Model: KS220M
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.0.4

I am using several of the KS220M motion sensor dimmers. The issue I am having is that the switch sometimes turns the bulb brightness to 100% despite reporting 1% in the app (and having a smart control rule of 1%). This doesn't happen consistently but I am noticing it specifically under the following conditions:

  • Smart Control Schedule rule is set to 1% brightness and app reports a 1% brightness at all times
  • Switch is motion triggered or turned on manually via hardware to 1% brightness without issue
  • After an unpredictable amount of time, switches sometimes (not consistently) turn lights to maximum (non-dimmed) brightness
  • App still reports 1% brightness (and Smart Control Schedule is still set to 1%)
  • Turning the switch off and on (both in the app and using the hardware) sometimes reproduces the above issue
  • Other times, turning the switch off and on resolves the issue

I have double-checked the following:

  • All switches have a decent WIFI signal (-60dBm reported in app) on modern electrical wiring (new in 2015).
  • Kasa account has a strong unique password and nothing else has rules to override the lighting level
  • Switches have been calibrated so the minimum brightness does not cause flickering
  • Switches appear to have the correct time
  • Checking the Ubquiti router logs shows that switches do not appear to be having connectivity issue

Hello @Light_Light ,

Thank you for your valuable feedback, I will check with our team about your case.  At the same , can I confirm if you set up any ordinary Schedule settings to adjust the brightness? Can I have a photo of your Smart Control settings, and ordinary schedule settings?

As the sounds unusual,to address the issue and try to fix it, we would like to have a specialist look into this further through email,  Please check your mailbox later.

Although support was unable to resolve the issue,  I found the following FAQ post: https://www.tp-link.com/us/support/faq/2939/

The HS220 only supports dimmable incandescent and LED lights based on TRIAC and  forward-phase-control, while it doesn’t support lamps based on PWM(pulse width module) or ELV(electronic low voltage)dimming.

Apparently, dimmers in the KASA switches have limited support for dimming LEDs and don't work correctly with many recessed lighting bulbs. Other brands such as Lutron (and older dimmers with no "smart" technology) work as expected.

Hello @Light_Light  thank you for your further feedback, I noticed our support suggested adjusting Calibration settings, you might give that a try.

KS220M uses the same type of dimming as HS220, so the content you posted applies to KS220M.

May I have a chance to know the model of bulb or have a link of the bulb working with the dimmer switch, I will keep an eye on similar case, thank you very much!

@Solla-topee
I don't believe that HS220 and KS220M have the same dimmer inside.
I have a pair of dimmable bulbs which work fine with HS220 but blinking with KS220M. (Merkury BW904)
Plus all smart touch functionality for HS220 dimmer (taps) is not supported on KS220M

Hello @Yokushka

Does bulb keep flashing when you set Dimming Calibration, if so it could be compatibility issue, I would also recommend to check dimming type with bulb support if possible.

This is the type of dimming that KS220M supports : Leading Edge dimming/TRIAC Phase out

@Solla-topee
It was https://merkuryinnovations.com/products/smart-wi-fi-bulb-color bulb. Who knows what it really is, but bulb is subpar compare to KL130. I was surprised it worked on HS220. Anyway, I apologize for assumption without enough test data. For example, I have two https://kodabuilt.com/products/koda-slim-15-led-ceiling-light-lm030004 lights on the same KS220M with no minimum brightness set. The only "technical specification" for dimming is "Compatible With all Standard Dimmer Switches" - no other info. And, at the end, one light behaves perfectly from 1% to 100% brightness, another one only works well starting from about 30% - it is perfect example how different lights could be even from the same batch. And now how to convince client with only one light on the switch that it is light issue and not a switch issue?
Also these lights is a perfect example why it is important to have possibility to limit max brightness on the switch (which some people already proposed) because 2 lights like this are too bright for the area, but client wanted lights like this.

@Yokushka

I came here to find an answer on how to set a maximum brightness on this motion dimmer.

Huge oversight IMO that there's no option. That's the whole point of a dimmer, to reduce the maximum output of a light. 🤦‍♂️
