H200 Hub Range
H200 Hub Range
Hi
I recently purchased the Tapo bundle that contained 2xC420S2 cameras and the H200 hub. Getting the cameras to connect ot the hub was fairly easy but when setting the camera's in the desired locations is proving troublesome. I tried to have the hub as central as possible but only one camera connects. Looking in the app the signal is showing bad. Had I known the range is this bad I would just gone with the wired C320WS option as that connects nicely to the mesh network. Is there anyway to boost the signal from the hub or do i need to get another hub so i can connect have both cameras operating. Would the H100 hub work?

Hi,
In this case, if you have a wireless range extender or Powerline product to extend your router network, for example, connect the range extender to the router via Wi-Fi and connect the H200 to the extender via a cable to go to the internet, then you can move the H200 closer to the cameras to connect.
If not, please help confirm the following information.
1. How far are the H200 and the cameras?
2. Are there any obstacles between the H200 and the cameras?
3. Send me a picture of the message that shows the camera has a bad signal in the Tapo app.

I also set up my C420S2 last week and found the wifi range really poor. My wifi network covers almost 2 acres with 20Mpbs at the extreme edge. The network where my cameras operate is around 60-90 Mbps but for one of the cameras, it says bad signal too and sometimes struggles with clear resolution. I was under the impression that these used my wifi network rather than a network created by the H200? Is that right? If not, why does it say bad signal?
Edit: just speed checked at the camera and it's 75Mbps down and 16Mbps up.

Hi, the Tapo Camera C420 is connected to the H200 via a Sub-G Wi-Fi signal rather than the 2.4G Wi-Fi signal from your home router. It says the signal is bad may because it's too far from the H200 or there are many obstacles between them. You can move the H200 closer to the Tapo Cam if possible and check if the cam will work fine.

Thanks for the response Solla-topee
It does pick up the hub when I move it closer but then the front camera losses connection which defeats the purpose unfortunately.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah mine hub is only 10-15m from the cameras. It's near the window closest to them so not much in the way of obstacles.

The window and its material may reduce the signal strength, please check if the cameras will have a better signal if you open the window. And it is recommended to place the H200 as close to the cameras as possible.
You can test if the two C420s will work properly after being installed at the desired place and when the H200 is near them. If yes, you can buy a second H200 and then connect each C420 to an H200 to work.

@Solla-topee So basically the only way to use them is to purchase another hub? I thought all TP-Link's products integrate?

Hi,
The Tapo C420 connects to hub H200 via a Sub-G Wi-Fi to go to the internet, and the H200 connects to the router to go to the internet(wired or Wi-Fi).
If the usage scenario is that two Tapo Cams are far apart, and when one cam connects to the hub with a good signal, the other Tapo Cam will have a very weak signal or even cannot connect to the hub, it is recommended to purchase an additional hub for the second cam to connect to work.
But if the usage scenario is that both Tapo Cams get a good signal from the hub, then there is no need to buy more hubs. Please note that a H200 can work with 4 Tapo battery-powered cameras simultaneously.
If you have a problem when using the Tapo C420 and the hub, please describe your network diagram/usage scenario and the problem in detail, and then I'll provide proper suggestions.
Best Regards

Did you find a solution to this? I too am having problems with the range of the H200 Hub. I have a doorbell camera D230 and C420 Camera both within 3m of the hub and half the signal is lost to them. Doorbell is literally 1m from the hub and the hub has full wifi strength 30-40Mb/s.
It says the hub is supposed to have a range of up to 30m. How is anyone using this product with such limitations?
