SD Card reinitialize after power cut
SD Card reinitialize after power cut

I recently bought 2 cameras, Tapo C320ws and C520ws, and two sd cards Sandisk High Endurance 256gb, now there is an issue that whenever there is a power cut, the sd card on 520ws gets initialized again die to which i have to format it again and i lose my recordings. The 320ws is working perfectly. Please help in resolving this asap.

Hi,
Please confirm the following information for the reported issue.
1. If you do not format the SD card on the Tapo app after a power outage, is there any message prompt on the Tapo app? What problem will you experience?
2. Please go to the camera's Device Settings > Reboot Camera page to reboot the camera before formatting the SD card, and then check if the camera and the SD card will work fine.
3. Insert another SD card into the Tapo C520WS if you have one, and then check if it helps.
Best Regards

Hey,
1. Yes it asks me to initialize the sd card to use it after every power outage, doing so means I have to format it.
2. Rebooting the camera after power outage fixes the sd card issue, but it doesn't have recording of in between when power came and reboot. It holds recording of before power outage and starts recording again after rebooting.
3. I've to check it, as the camera is at a hard to reach spot.

Hi,
Please confirm more detailed information about the reported issue for further analysis.
1. What are the Tapo C520WS's firmware and hardware versions?
2. Why is there a power cut to the camera? Did a regional power outage cause it? How often did the power outage occur? How was the power restored?
3. If rebooting the camera after a power outage resolves the SD card issue, did you perform the reboot through the Tapo app or by unplugging and replugging the power cord into the camera?

@Solla-topee
I am also experincing this same issue of losing the formatting on the SD card when power is lost to the c520ws cameras. Firmware version: 1.1.1 , Hardware version: 2.0. , Sandisk extreme pro 256GB SD card.
This happens when power is lost regionally which happens regularly in my area. This creates a security lapse because I am not always home or monitoring the app to know that the cameras have expericed a power interruption and are no longer recording to the SD cards when power is restored. For testing reasons this also happens when the camera is unplugged from the wall but my cameras have dedicated plugs so they always remain plugged in. Any loss of power essentially renders the cameras useless until you manually correct the issues in the app. This is a huge functionality and security problem.
Rebooting the camera through the app manually like you suggested above does restore the SD card functionality. The previously recorded footage before power interruption is then still accessable and the cameras then continue to functioning normally. So that is a great temporary fix. But this should be done automatically by the software of the camera and shouldn't require manual intervention of going into the settings on the app and clicking the camera reboot button.
Also when these power interruptions occur upon entering the app the automatic pop up stating the SD card is not formated is the only clue that a power interruption has happened and the only options in that pop up menu are just to format the SD card. Why not simply include a reboot camera option in that same menu, or better yet just fix the software to do this all automatically so there is no lapse in functionality when power is restored. The camera should just automatically do this reboot camera option upon being turned on, that in itself would solve the issue. If I didn't discover this technical post here I would have never even known rebooting the cameras to resolve this SD card issue was even a option. I would have just clicked format SD card button which then would have made me lose all my previous recordings. This again creates a security issue as many customers won't know this and potentially lose important recordings before power was lost by clicking format SD card.
Another separate issue I have in this same situation, which is completely my own personal opinion but I do believe to be a security vulnerability is that upon power being restored to the cameras they state out loud for everyone in the cameras proximity to hear: "the SD card is not formated, please format the SD card according to the app guidelines". This is also a huge security let down because now everyone in the proximity of the cameras knows there is a issue with the cameras storage system. In my opinion even during setup phase for the camera this shouldn't be stated over the speaker out loud, it's completely unnecessary and with the power problem becomes an additional security vulnerability.
Thanks for taking the time to read my response, hopefully this helps other people experiencing the same issue and helps to provide insight into getting this issue fixed. I absolutely love these cameras. They are great in every aspect and I highly recommend them as they are great value and are a very well built product that has amazing technology and features. Please take this seriously and fix this software issue. It should be so simple to fix with a quick firmware update, let's get this camera functioning properly and better TP Link community and technical team. Thanks again

My Tapo C202 has the same issue; anytime there is a power outage or loss of power, the system will recognize the SD card as new and require formatting.
I did an experement. I used a save recording to accomplish results.
1. I reboot using app.
Result: The recording is still there and the SD card is not recognized as fresh.
2. I re-enact the lost of power by disconnecting the power source.
Result: The SD card is recognized as new and requires formatting.
3. I have experimented with three different types of SD cards: DM 128GB, SandDisk 32, and Unbranded SDCard 32.
Result: The outcome of executing steps 1 and 2 is the same.
In summary:
* I believe the problem is with the firmware, which fails to store the SD card state, causing it to recognize the SD card as new when the power is cut off.
* Although it's not ideal if there is a scenario to examine for an emergency, the way the software formatted the SD card secures the footage that cannot be duplicated straight for computer copy. That's not the right way to express it. Anyway, that's a different problem.
* The biggest weakness here that irritates me is that the sdcard issue has to be resolved immediately; else, you risk losing sales and reputation.
