Persistent SD Card Failures in Tapo C510W Cameras
Persistent SD Card Failures in Tapo C510W Cameras
I have six Tapo C510W cameras installed—three purchased on October 9, 2024, and three more about a month later from the same shop. The first three cameras are equipped with Kingston Canvas Select Plus MicroSD cards (128GB, 100MB/s) and have been running flawlessly for over a year without any issues.
However, the other three cameras consistently damage SD cards. These are the same Kingston cards, bought on the same date from the same store, yet after running for a short period (anywhere from one week to two or three months), the cards become corrupted and unusable. Once corrupted, they cannot be formatted or recovered in any way. I have tested multiple replacement cards, but the problem persists. All cameras are powered using the original adapters.
Today, a neighbor who also owns Tapo C510W cameras reported experiencing the same issue: his SD card was rendered unusable. Notably, he also uses two cameras from another manufacturer with identical SD cards, and those work perfectly fine.
This strongly suggests that the issue lies specifically with the Tapo C510W model. It is not acceptable to replace SD cards every week, and I kindly request that this problem be investigated thoroughly.
Same issue as described here but the power supply is original power supply provided with camera. https://community.tp-link.com/en/smart-home/forum/topic/682470

Hi,
1. The compatible or incompatible microSD cards listed in the instructions below reflect the results of testing conducted by our relevant departments (please note that we do not have details regarding the testing methodology). Given the vast array of SD card brands and models available on the market, we cannot guarantee compatibility with other microSD cards not listed in the compatibility list; therefore, we recommend purchasing a microSD card from the list. Regarding the phenomenon you encountered with the pny card, we currently have no further tips to offer. If your microSD card appears on the compatibility list but you are still experiencing the same phenomenon when using it with the camera, we recommend emailing our technical support team for assistance.

2. Regarding the phenomenon you reported that three recordings disappear, please also email our technical support team with the following information for assistance.
1) Describe the phenomenon you are experiencing in detail. It's appreciated if you could provide screenshots or a video showing the phenomenon.
2) The camera's model and version info.
3) If you have enabled the Diagnostics option, you can refer to the following instructions to collect the camera log and send it to our technical support team.

Hello,
I am wondering if you received any procedures or advice on the SD Card failures. I've had the same issue with both cameras. I've gotten radio silence for about a week now. They seem to be "blaming the victims" LOL rather than accepting that there seems to be a design or functional problem with the writing or rewriting/looping of data to the cards.
Any info is much appreciated.

@ShuggieWee For me the problem was not solved, still persist, at least TPLINK could provide lifetime cloud storage for free, otherwise the cameras are only for live view, I am already tired of buying sd cards, which are not cheap btw.

I too have persistent corruption of SD cards. C325WB v1 firm 1.3.4 - and 128GB micro SD big brand. and a TC41 v1 firm 1.3.4 with a 32GB micro SD.
It occurs as the final 5% of space is being used - which I guess is files overwriting. I have done the usual reformat but that solution only lasts a few days and the need to reformat occurs even if the card is not approaching full.
There are too many similar reports for this to be a fake card issue.

Hi,
If you have a problem after using the microSD card in the camera for a period of time, it may be related to the SD card's quality or use case. We recommend following these steps for initial troubleshooting.
1. Please use the third-party tool "H2testw" to test the SD card and send us the test results.
How to Verify Fake Micro SD Cards
2. If the SD card can't be formatted or recognized in the Tapo app, please refer to the following instructions to troubleshoot.
What should I do if the SD card cannot be formatted/recognized?
If the same phenomenon persists, please provide the following information for further analysis.
1. On the camera's Device Settings > Device Info page, please check its model number, firmware, and hardware versions.
2. Describe the phenomenon you are experiencing. Check if any error messages appear in the Tapo app when the SD card becomes unusable on the camera.
3. Confirm the model number and capacity of the SD card. Ensure the SD card is purchased from its authorized seller.
4. If your SD card is not listed in the compatibility chart. We recommend selecting an SD card from the list to work with our camera.

@Solla-topee i have done all that and clearly there is common problem reported by many users of Tapo products.
We are all reporting these failures to get action from Tapo, not to be fobbed off with a generic faq.

i completely agree with you and buying more sd cards.
Did Tapo offer the cloud storage as a "solution"?
Live view isn't useful for security purposes in my opinion.
Thanks for the reply and information.

I agree with you. There is an issue with the writing process or rewriting process not the cards.
