AI detection needs some attention
Hi everyone,
I'm using a few different Tapo cameras and I'm happy so far with the performance.
However... the AI doesn't always work perfectly and you have to fiddle around a bit and make compromizes.
But with my latest addition, C545D, I noticed it is even worse. My alarm sounds every night, because of some cats that pass by.
The camera correctly identifies it as a "pet" event, but also as a "person". That happens for both camera lenses and not just the fixed or PT one.
I already have the sensitivity all the way down and I put in some zones, but it has gotten to a point where more zoning would defeat the point of having the camera.
I want and need the person detection feature.
The camera is mounted at about 8'6"ft high and has a clear view. This is not about "false" notification from some clouds or shadows, but actual events happening that get mistaken for something else. The distance is also rather close and about 10'-15' and the cat (or person) is clearly visible.
Sadly there is only one sensitivity slider that affects both lenses at once, not a separate one. That could help a little.
What wuld be even better would be some kind of "calibration" mode for the AI to get the scale and distance right. Like starting the process, standing in a place that's a specific distance away from the camera and letting it take that as a reference for the AI.
What's also strange is that there doesn't seem to be any communication between both lenses. I understand that they could be facing different views and actually have different events happening, but... it being "AI" should be possible to recognize overlapping field of views and knowing when the fixed lens identified an animal that it is the same animal crossing into the PT lens and not a person. I mean it sometimes happens withing a few seconds and I do have a partial overlap of both cameras.
Apart from this, and as a sidenote, "line crossing" is also kinda useless outdoor, because of all the pollen, rain, etc... it triggers like every 30 seconds or more. Would be cool if the "AI" could identify such patterns and subtract them from being seen as an event.
I am all for getting too many notifications instead of missing some that are important, but these are waaay to many and make the camera almost worthless.
I hope this gets looked at and the "AI" gets reworked of sorts, because it doesn't seem like there is actually any AI working there, if it fails to distinguish a person from a cat.
Btw: This mostly (or only) seems to happen at night. I didn't notice any false alarms going of durign the day yet.
And another thing:
This seems also to be the issue when it switches from day-mode to IR-mode, like when my lights outside turn on at night and then turn back off after a minute. The cam switches from Ir to day back to IR and then seems to trigger some events.
This is also true with vehicle recognition, which is also totally useless.
I wanted it to start an automation and maybe even unlock my door, so I don't have to get my keys when I'm unloading my car. But not only doesn't it work properly, it gets triggered at sunrise when the camera switches off from IR mode and then suddenly sees my car in the driveway. That's a very bad time to turn on some lights or unlock my door.
