Model: Tapo C500
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.0.6

Hello,

My c500 camera does not provide a video stream higher than 1280/720, at the link rtsp://192.168.1.108/stream1. On stream1, the resolution is even lower, 640x480 if I'm not mistaken.

In the Tapo app, the quality is set to maximum (1080p).

Is this a bug, my C200 doesn't give me this problem?

Good evening

I did a reset on the camera and it seems to be working fine since then.

What I don't understand is that I did exactly the same thing 2 days before.

  @Minsc

Hi,
With firmware 1.0.6, when you go to the Tapo C500's Device Settings>Video & Display> Video Quality page, you can select 1080P, 360P, or Auto. If you have selected 1080P, when you stream the camera with the link rtsp://192.168.1.108/stream1, the video quality should be 1080P.

In this case, please go to the Tapo app>Live View page of the Tapo C500, and send me a picture of the Live View page if the video quality is 1080P. And send me a picture of the camera's view page when streaming it with the link rtsp://192.168.1.108/stream1 to have a comparison.

Best Regards

  @Solla-topee

here is as requested:
C500 display parameters:

c500 in Tapo application:

C500 via RTSP (VLC):

and for comparison with my c200 which works well in rtsp:

C200 via RTSP (VLC):

If you need more precise logs, I am available (by explaining how to do it).

  @Minsc

Hi,
Thank you for the pictures.
When streaming the Tapo camera via RTSP with the link rtsp://IP address/stream1 on the VLC player, you can see the Video resolution on the little window's Codec page.
If your VLC player shows the Video resolution is 1920x1080P when streaming the C500 with link rtsp://192.168.1.108/stream1, it means the C500 uses the correct video resolution, and it works as expected.
Best Regards

  @Solla-topee

hello,

if you look closely at the screenshot which corresponds to the VLC RTSP stream of the C500, the resolution is unfortunately 1280x720 (you were probably wrong with the example of the C200 which works as expected).

  @Minsc

Hi,
It may be you haven't reset the camera to factory default settings successfully thus it does not solve the issue before.

Glad to hear the problem is solved and the camera is working properly now. You can keep monitoring the camera and start a thread if you need further help.

Best Regards

  @Solla-topee After an upgrade I have the same issue with multiple cameras.

Before the upgrade, I could determine stream1's resolution by choosing between 1080p, 720p, 360p and Auto in the app.

After the upgrade I only have 1080p, 360p and Auto left in the app, and additionally the reported issue that, even when I have definitely set 1080p (or 360p), it will send 720p for some cameras, 360p for others, but rarely 1080p (even though the WiFi link should easily be able to sustain even three 1080p streams, let alone just the one).

So, it seems it is in fact hard stuck in Auto mode for RTSP, regardless of what is set in the app.

I suspect the reset that appears to fix the problem wasn't a fix, but merely reset whatever algorithm is used for Auto mode, causing 1080p to be chosen after the reset, but the setting actually still being Auto for RTSP.

Regardless, I have way too many cameras to factory reset them all, and I don't get why TP-LINK is removing options in an "upgrade" in the first place. That seems like a regression to me.

This change has effectively removed 720p as a static option for RTSP/ONVIF use altogether... Why exactly? What is wrong with 720p?

I have some apps that work perfectly as long as the resolution doesn't change, and not so perfectly now when it does :(

Will TP-LINK fix this and, if so, when? If not, why not? In the meanwhile, how can I easily downgrade the cameras to undo this brainfart of an "upgrade" that unilaterally removed useful functionality, and didn't even manage to do that properly?

Lastly, is there any documentation available on what algorithm is used for the "Auto" mode? Because when I record the resolution set vs. the actual link quality, the choice of resolution in Auto mode seems completely arbitrary, and as a bonus it introduces totally unacceptable lag (10-30 seconds) at first connection time.

  @raphidae

Hi,
Generally, when the video quality is set to 1080P on the Tapo app for the camera, the resolution should be 1080P rather than the other one when you stream the camera via RTSP. If your resolution is others when streaming the camera via RTSP or you want the 720P option immediately, we can escalate your case to the tech team for further analysis.

Our product department considered various factors and decided to change the video quality options to 1080P, 360P, and Auto through a firmware upgrade. However, since there are some customers requested to add the 720P option back, while I don't have any specific details that I can share about whether this option can come to the product again or when it might, I'll log the feature request, and pass it along to the team to evaluate.

Best Regards
