The power light doesn't come on and my trouble shooter says I need to connect the cable.
Did you install the driver for the adapter - its available on the support page - here.
Just make sure that you've selected the correct HW version - it's on the device bottom sticker.
If the adapter power light still doesn't come on try another USB port.
