From what it sounds like, the plug may simply be disconnecting from your Wi-Fi network, causing you to have to read the device to your network and app. I would recommend setting a Static IP address, or an IP address reservation, in your router settings for your plug. This may provide a more consistent and reliable path for communication.

When the disconnect happens, is there anything unusual that occurs? Such as a network outage, or other devices dropping at the time.
