Introducing New Smart Charge Guard for Charging Connected Devices

c2619a75fe7c481dbe01a44939e527f9The New Smart Charge Feature allows you to turn off a device's power when its consumption drops below a certain level, protecting your device’s battery from overcharging and reducing your potential energy use.

This is possible because as your device charges, it will consume different amounts of power – this is also why you may that find the first 50% of your phone battery charges significantly faster than the second half.

While the values for each device will be different, below you can find the recommended settings based on our internal laboratory testing:

  • Mobile Phone / Tablet: 30 Minutes at 2W
  • Laptop Computer: 60 Minutes at 2W
  • Watch/Headphones: 50 Minutes at 1W

Note: Smaller Accessories or Devices are not recommended due to their limited power consumption and lack of an obvious power drop while charging – resulting in your device not being fully charged.

6af6208a3a674b4b82d7f03159800a7bTip: If you are having difficulty with your device not charging to full with the Smart Charge Guard feature, try adjusting the custom power settings to a higher value and for a longer period of time.

Increased Power Protections for Connected Devices

The New Power Protection feature cuts off the power when the power consumption of the connected device exceeds a set threshold. This feature can be done to protect your devices from overloading the plug or circuit or as an added precaution to prevent runaway devices.

For Example, you can use Power Protection to turn off a Space Heater whenever the Power Exceeds 1.5kW.

What is the Difference Between the Smart Charge Guard and the Power Protection Features?

Smart Charge Guard can cut off the power when the power consumption of the back-end equipment is lower than a certain value for a period of time, which is applied to protect the battery and save power.

Power Protection can cut off the power supply when the power consumption of the back-end equipment is higher than a certain value, which is applied to prevent overload and ensure the safety of power consumption.

  @Riley_S

These sound like useful additions. I assume these mean that the P110 is monitoring line voltage, which would be an enhancement. Having recently experienced a four-hour brownout, I suggest that the software be enhanced to also track/respond to low voltage situations. Some of my neighbors experienced failures in some electronic equipment as a result of the brownout. Having this added to the software could help to prevent such situations.

One other thought - being able to see a history of voltage fluctuations would be helpful. With increasing demands on the grid, we're all likely to see more of these situations in the future.

Hey @JCH2103,

I will make sure to pass your feedback to our R&D teams to consider as you may be correct that they will be more common in the future. Howeverm I have a feeling that it may be difficult to track the voltage changes due to the fact the plug also needs to have a consistent stream of power in order to function itself. I could see drops in voltage potentially affecting the plugs normal function

@Riley_S  Hi. Will Smart Charge Guard feature be rolled out across existing P110 products?  I'd imagine this is only a firmware/software change.  I have a few UK plug P110s that I'd like to have the option to power off if the consumption drops below a certain level for a certain time. Cheers - Andy

Hey  @Shiver,

I am really not too sure about this one. While it could potentially be a firmware or software update, it is very likely that it requires specific hardware to function the way it currently does. I believe that this feature is stored on the device itself, meaning that there are additional requirements, such as the device being able to process the information accurately and reliably.

For the US, this version of the P110 is the first to be released - so we do not know anything about any previous or non-US versions. As far as I know, the feature is only currently available to US-based P110 models. You would need to check with the team from our global forum, but they may not know due to the features limited rollout to the US.
