Firmware Version: 1.2.3

Hi,

I’m experiencing an issue with my Tapo C510W camera in a Wi-Fi mesh network configured with a Freebox Ultra and its official repeater. Despite the mesh setup, the camera consistently connects to the farthest repeater, even when a closer repeater with a stronger and more stable signal is available. I have one Freebox and two official repeaters in this setup.

Here are the details:

  • The network is set up in mesh mode using a Freebox Ultra and one of its official mesh-compatible repeaters.
  • The camera initially connects to the closer repeater (after a restart of this repeater), but eventually switches back to the farther one, resulting in poor connection quality and intermittent video stream.
  • Signal strength is reported as good, but the camera struggles to maintain a consistent connection.
  • Other devices in the same area connect correctly to the nearest repeater without issues (laptop, smartphones).

What I’ve tried so far:

  1. Restarting, reinitializing the camera and the repeater.
  2. Disabling the farther repeater temporarily to force the camera to connect to the closer one. This works initially, but the issue reappears when the farther repeater is turned back on.
  3. Checking the Wi-Fi settings on the Freebox and ensuring the camera is on the 2.4 GHz band.

Questions:

  • Is there a way to "lock" the camera to a specific repeater in a mesh network?
  • Could this behavior be due to how the Tapo C510W prioritizes access points?
  • Any suggestions to improve this situation or debug the camera's connection behavior?

Thank you for your help!

Hi,
1. There are no settings on the camera to lock to a specific AP/RE in a mesh network. Some mesh Router/APs may have this feature, and you can contact the mesh router/AP support to confirm.

2. Tapo C510W does not have the function of prioritizing AP. According to your description, it may be that the camera and the connected AP were temporarily disconnected. When reconnecting to the AP, affected by the actual network environment, the distant AP responded to the camera's reconnection request first, so the camera connected to the distant AP.

For your situation, you can try to swap the positions of the two REs, and check if the camera will connect to the closest RE or not.

Best Regards
