When set to event recording only, if I switch to live view upon receipt of a notification, I find that the event clip gets truncated – for example it may only be a few seconds long, depending on what time the live view began.  I understand that I could wait for a couple of minutes after the notification before accessing live view, but obviously that defeats the object of responding immediately to the notification.  I suppose one could begin manual record as soon as one switches to live view, but that is messy and inconvenient, and would still leave a short break between two clips which would be discontinuous.

Hi,
Generally, clicking the detection notification to view the camera's live view page won't truncate the corresponding detection video clip. You may wait for a moment after the detected event stops, then go to the Playback & Download > Playback page to see whether the detection video clip is completed.

If not, please confirm the following information.
  1. Please go to the Tapo app > Me > About page to check the app version.
  2. Are the video recordings stored on an inserted SD card or our cloud server?
  3. Could you please send us a video showing the reported phenomenon? You can upload the video to your cloud server (such as Google Drive), generate a download link, and send it to me (@Solla-topee) via a private message.

Best Regards
