Model: Tapo C200
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version:

My C200 has destroyed 3 SD cards now, meaning they are undetectable and unreadable in any device.
A new 128gb card was purchased with the camera, it was formatted in the camera and worked perfectly fine for 2 weeks, then I had a message saying it needed to be initialised, I tapped the button and had a failure warning, then the camera said there was no SD card installed.

i followed all instructions, hints and tips about resetting, powering off, deleting the app, etc, etc, but it wouldn't recognise the card again.
I tried the card in my pc, another camera, a phone, and my tablet, but none of them detected the card!

I assumed it was a faulty card and purchased another one...well would you believe it, the same thing happened to the new card after it worked perfectly for a month, now that card is unreadable too!

i finally popped in an old 8gb card I had, that I knew was fine...the camera failed to format the card, and now it won't work in the device I took it from, and it can't be found via my PC!!
What's going on Tapo, is this a common problem with the C200, and should I return it as faulty?

Hi,
Typically, the Tapo camera won't destroy the inserted microSD cards. In your situation, please confirm the following information for further analysis.

  1. What are the three SD cards' model numbers and capacities?
  2. You can try removing the SD card from your camera and inserting it again several times (such as three times), then test if the camera can detect it.
  3. Based on your description, the third SD card (8GB) has never been used with the camera; it's hard to say that the camera caused this card not to work.
  4. Do you have another Tapo camera to have a comparison?

Best Regards

The two 128gb cards formatted first time and worked fine for a few weeks until the camera spit them out one after each other.

I've tried removing and reinserting all cards quite a number of times, obviously without success.
The two 128gb cards both formatted first time and worked perfectly for a number of weeks, then without warning, the camera spit them out and didn't recognise them again (no microSD card)....

....The 8gb was working just fine in another device, but to satisfy my curiosity I tried it in the camera...

...No other Tapo camera is available, however, my partner has the same style camera of another brand, and that too doesn't see any of the cards when inserted, but it does see the SD card she uses. End..

Hi,
Thank you for the information you have provided. We understand the phenomenon you experienced with the Tapo C200 and would like to share some possible reasons. According to the compatibility list shown in the instructions below, the SD card models you are currently using are not included in the official compatibility list. Using SD cards that are not listed may lead to unpredictable issues, such as detection failures or storage errors.
In addition, if the SD card is not a high-endurance model specifically designed for video surveillance and continuous read/write operations, it may also encounter performance problems when used with the camera.
What type of microSD card does Tapo/Kasa Camera support?

To ensure optimal performance and avoid similar issues in the future, we strongly recommend that you use SD card models listed in the official compatibility table and purchase them through an authorized seller. This will help guarantee compatibility and stability.

Best Regards
