Model: Archer GE800
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version: 1.2.1 Build 20250610 rel.39070(5553)

Monday, August 4th 2025, sometime in the early morning hours pacific (before 8am), I was not at home but was checking on a security camera in the room the router is in. I normally have the LEDs OFF, so I noticed the LEDs were doing the "FIRE" animation. I also noticed anything on the wireless networks of this router were offline.

Once I got home to assess, I could not even get into the router to troubleshoot. I had to THEN reboot it and THEN was able to log in through the IP of the router. It has completely factory reset.

I have no idea what the firmware was prior to this. The current firmware that's on there now, 1.2.1 Build 20250610 rel.39070(5553) is what was there when I was able to log in. I don't know if this was the firmware prior to this happening or not. I also could not access any logs (I have an SSD attached) as there were none to see.

Now, I DID notice some new options/features, but I already had the new red/gaming UI prior to this, and I recall updating the router firmware maybe a month ish ago, which brought this new red/UI.

I do have the router set to auto update, so perhaps that's what occurred -- the router did auto update, but something got tangled up causing the router to reset? OR was this supposed to happen -- meaning that this update have to FORCE a factory reset? I don't see TPLINK doing that, though.

I guess I am just asking if this has happened to someone else on this specific router or any other router.

Hello @Nyquist-Shannon, thank you for bringing this to our attention.

According to the firmware release notes, updating to the latest 1.2.1 Build 20250610 rel.39070(5553) version won't reset the router to factory defaults.

However, due to the unintended situation on your GE800, could you please help recall some details to help clarify the situation?

1. How did you verify the router got completely factory reset? Were you required to create a login password again, or did you need to go through the Quick Setup?

2. If you've previously had the new red/black gaming UI before this new 1.2.1 version, I assume you may install a pre-release version manually that we provided on the community here. Can you recall?

 hi @Kevin_Z

1. i had to set up a login password as one normally would when the device is factory reset. I keep the LED lights off normally but those were running which was a visual indicator that the router was set back to defaults.

2. i have the router set to auto update. i did not manually install the prior firmware.

@Nyquist-Shannon

I see. Thank you for the clarification.

I assume that your device was reset during the automatic firmware upgrade process probably because it encountered an unknown abnormality. However, considering this unintended behavior occurred only once, we suggest paying closer attention to it.

We will also keep an eye out for whether any other customers have similar feedback.

Please let us know if anything new comes up.

  @Kevin_Z

hi,

Yeah, I think it was a glitch in the universe. it just means I should do backups from now on. usually I don't and that is not a good thing, but my network is not too difficult to set up, so I was back up and running in minutes. I have two separate Internet providers in my home, so I was not totally down. Things have been stable since this occurred, so for now all is well. just wanted to see if this has happened to others who have this router and firmware.

cheers...

@Nyquist-Shannon

Performing regular backups is a good habit. It enables us to recover data at any time in the event of unexpected situations.laugh
