Firmware Version:

Hey Everyone,

To resolve significant reliability and performance concerns associated with the WireGuard VPN client on the M8550, our engineering team has produced a specialized firmware update. This release addresses configuration parsing errors, strengthens connection stability, and optimizes traffic routing efficiency.

Applies to:

M8550(EU/US)_V1.0/1.6

We recommend installing this beta firmware if you happen to experience any of the following behaviors:

  • Configuration File Import Error: Unable to import WireGuard VPN configuration files due to parsing errors or unsupported parameters.

  • Connection Failures: After the configuration file is imported successfully, the VPN tunnel fails to establish a stable connection.

  • Traffic Routing Issues: VPN Client status may display "connected", but VPN traffic cannot pass properly between the client and the remote WireGuard VPN server.

Hi  @Ryan,

thank you for sharing the beta firmware and the update on the WireGuard fixes.

I am currently using an M8550(EU) Ver: 1.0 and I am facing ongoing problems with the WireGuard client when trying to connect the device to my FRITZ!Box 7590 AX.

Here is the situation:

  • The WireGuard client configuration can be entered successfully after simplifying it.

  • However, the connection status remains stuck on "Connecting" and no handshake is established.

  • I also tried using the current public IP address directly as the endpoint instead of DynDNS, but the behavior is the same.

  • In addition, I tried to install the beta firmware referenced in this thread, but the device rejects it with the following message:

Error code: 4503
The uploaded file was not accepted.

Because my device is M8550(EU) Ver: 1.0, I assume that the firmware currently provided is not compatible with the EU V1.0 model.

Could you please confirm this?

Also, could you let us know when a working firmware for the M8550(EU) Ver: 1.0 will be available, especially one that fixes the current WireGuard client issues?

At the moment, the router is unfortunately not usable for this WireGuard client scenario with a FRITZ!Box as VPN endpoint.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Best regards

Hi,
You can refer to "Method 3: Local upgrade via web management page" in the following instructions to update the M8550's firmware.
How to upgrade the firmware of TP-Link 5G Mobile Wi-Fi

After you download the "1.2.0_3.0.0_Build_20260121_Beta" from this post, it's a .zip file. Please unzip it to have the .bin firmware file first, then check whether you can update the firmware via the M8550's web UI.

Best Regards

Hello  @Solla-topee

thank you for your reply.

Yes, I already extracted the ".bin" file from the ".zip" archive and tried the local upgrade through the M8550 web management page as described in Method 3.

Unfortunately, the firmware update still fails and I receive the following message:

Error code: 4503

The uploaded file was not accepted.

My device is an M8550(EU) Ver: 1.0, so it seems the beta firmware file from this thread is not accepted by this EU hardware version.

Could you please confirm whether this beta is actually compatible with M8550(EU) Ver: 1.0?

If not, when can we expect a compatible beta or official firmware for the EU Ver: 1.0 model that includes the WireGuard fixes?

Best regards

Ludwig

Hi,
Thank you for your test and feedback. I have sent the firmware for the M8550(EU) V1 to you via a private message. Please try updating the firmware again and check if that helps.
Best Regards
