Update Reset Entire Router
Yesterday

I got up today and found I had no smart device operation. I have about 30 devices. No WiFi, no Internet. I went to login to my router, and it asked me to "Create a password." My router had basically been factory reset. I had to create all my networks and passwords again. All my port forwarding was deleted.

I have been deleting all my smart devices and adding them back, linking them again with Google Home, security cameras, air conditioners, heaters, bulbs, outlets, audio/video equipment, sensors, etc. It has been 3 hours now and I'm not even halfway done. This has been a pain in the ass. I've turned off automatic updates in the router. I hope this will prevent the router from deleting everything.

@-TE5LA- save the configuration file and you can just reload it to the router in case something like this happens again.  I also have auto update turned off.

Hello @-TE5LA- ,

Welcome to our community.

May I know the model number, firmware and hardware version of your device? Please refer to

How to find the model number of your TP-Link device

How to find the hardware and firmware version of my TP-Link device

This type of unexpected reset is unusual and shouldn't occur under normal circumstances.

Regarding firmware updates and your settings:
It's worth noting that firmware updates are primarily for fixing software anomaly, improving performance, or adding new features. These updates typically do not affect the configuration and network settings stored in your router. After a firmware update, you should be able to log in to the router's management interface to check and confirm that all settings are still valid. So disabling automatic updates may not be the root solution if firmware wasn't the cause.

To prevent this pain in the future:
We strongly recommend using the Backup & Restore feature, which allows you to conveniently save your router configuration and quickly restore it if this ever happens again:

Here are some suggestions that you can try:

  • Make sure you and someone else didn't accidentally reset the router. There are two ways to reset the router: How to Factory Reset Your TP-Link Router
  • Make sure no one else has the necessary permissions, such as logging into your router with the same account to reset it.
  • Make sure there was no unexpected interruption during the firmware update process, as this could also lead to unexpected behavior.
