Model: ER605 (TL-R605)
Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version: 2.2.2

Hi everyone,

Let me make a brief and describe the situation.

Router: ER605 v2, firmware 2.2.2 Build 20231017 Rel.68869.
MTU = MRU = 1492
MSS clamping = auto
PPPoE

The modem with fiber optics connection is running as bridge. The MTU value recommended by the ISP is 1492.

Access point: GPT-2741GNAC-N1-SV (it is a fiber optics modem/router no longer used. It is set DHCP off and no NAT. It is working only as AP providing both 2,4 and 5 ghz connection).

The problem: some apps on smartphones connected to wifi do not work properly (like Twitter media, for example). This problem only happens on cellphones. When I run the same on computer also connected to the wifi, no problem. Also no problem while using cable connection.

I read that it seems to be related to MTU settings, however I did not find out how to adjust it correctly yet.

Everything worked fine before installing the ER605 that replaced the ISP router.

Thank you!

Secondary link is down, because cabling is not ready yet on that room.

Hi  @d0ugmac1! Tks for replying.

I was not able to make this test, because I can only change the settings and cause a connection failure during night time. Now the strangest thing: no changes done and suddenly all apps that were failing on smartphones connected to wifi started working properly. Have no idea what happened here.

Thx again!

Hi @Icaro

Thanks for posting in our business forum.

Is this supposed to be a problem with the WIFI? You said it only happened on the WIFI devices. So, if this does not happen on all wired devices, watching the Twitter media from the desktop, you should check the WIFI settings.

At most, you check the LAN DNS server. Nothing else. I don't think this relates to the router. Why not swap with the old router and test again?

And what's the MTU and MRU on your old router? You should copy what was working to the new model.

Hi  @Clive_A !

The strangest part is that the problem happens only on wifi and on cellphones! When I connect a PC to the same wifi connection, no problem.

What I have already tried:

• back to the old router and no problem happened.
• then back to ER605: now I have just tried a different access point device and the same problem occurred. On both devices, the cryptography is set to WPA/WPA2-PSK.
• tried to set MRU = MTU = 1468 on ER605, but the connection stopped working. Changed back to 1492. When changed back to 1492 it took a long time to work again. Got no connection more than 10 minutes.

About your questions:

• the MTU is 1492 on the ISP default router. There is no MRU parameter nor MSS Clamping setting.

• LAN DNS: it is set the same as WAN DNS: primary 8.8.8.8 and secondary 1.1.1.1

Thank you!

  @Icaro

Did you power cycle the router after making these changes?

  @d0ugmac1

Yes and no. Explain:

When changed MTU and MRU to 1468, I did not reboot the router. The connection stopped working and I found it did not accept that value for MTU and MRU.

Then I changed back to 1492, but still no connection despite of "connected" status on WAN screen.

And then I reboot the router. It took a long time to get back working, about 10 minutes after restarting and now with 1492 value set.

Thx!

  @Icaro

Ok, leave the MRU alone (reset to default value as your internal devices won't likely care), set only the MTU to 1400 (to control your outbound fragmentation) and reboot your router.  Validate.
