Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version: 1.1.2

Hello Tapo Support team,

I have an important usability issues to report and a suggestion for improvement.

Issue:

The camera’s auto day/night mode does not respond reliably to changes in lighting. It sometimes stays in night mode despite sufficient light, or does not switch to day mode while it is dark.

Impact:

There is a delay of several seconds before the camera switches modes. During that delay (for example, several seconds after it has already been dark), any intruder could pass unnoticed. This delay undermines the camera’s effectiveness and has been a frequent complaint.

Suggestion:

Please add two user controls:

  1. A sensitivity meter for the auto mode so users can adjust the light threshold between day and night modes.

  2. A transition-speed setting (or minimum dwell time) to control how quickly the camera switches modes, or to require the new lighting condition to persist for a configurable number of seconds before switching.

Additional context:

I own a company that provides and installs surveillance cameras for various facilities. We have deployed many Tapo cameras, and this issue has become a common concern with the newer models (like tapo c520ws). Interestingly, the older models such as the Tapo C200 did not exhibit this problem — the day/night transition was more responsive and reliable.

Thank you for considering this improvement. I’m happy to provide further details or logs if it would help diagnose the problem.

Best regards

  @MHashem

Hi,

If the Tapo C200 automatically switches between Day and Night mode normally, please provide the following information for further analysis.

  1. What's the Tapo C200's hardware and firmware version?

  2. Please place the Tapo C200 and C520WS in the same location for a comparative test. You can insert an SD card in the Tapo C200 and C520WS and enable continuous recording.
How can I store the Tapo camera video recordings on a microSD card

  3. After the reported phenomenon occurs, please download the corresponding video clips from the SD cards in the Tapo app to compare the automatic Day/Night mode switching on the Tapo C200 and Tapo C520WS. Then, please send us the video clips for further analysis.

You can upload the videos to your cloud server (such as Google Drive), generate a download link, and send it to me (@Solla-topee) via a private message.

Best Regards
