I brought Tapo C520WS camera and installed the same. I have configured the same using Tapo app, but i observe that the device keeps showing offline in Tapo app every now and then even though its led shows green soon after configuration. I suspected it could be network issue as tools like wifi analyzer were showing low signal strength and have installed a wifi extender for the same and now the signal strength is between -50 dbm to -55 dbm. But the camera still shows offline after some time. Other devices are working perfectly connnecting to the network too. The LED always shows solid orange colour instead of green and am pretty sure its recording, but it shows offline in Tapo app.

 

 

 

I have tried everything i could as suggested in the community posts but with no luck. Any pointers on how to fix this is greatly appreciated.

 

 

 

Router am using: TP-Link AX1500 Wi-Fi 6 Router

 

Wifi Extender am using: TP-Link | AC1200 WiFi Range Extender RE305

 

 

 

I have to restart my router and camera to be able to make it work again and change the led colour back to green and this has to be done atleast once every day!!

Hi,
The solid amber light on the Tapo C520WS V1 means the camera is connected to the Wi-Fi but not the TP-Link cloud server. Please try the following steps to check if they are helpful.

 

  1. Please update the camera's firmware and the Tapo app version. If the problem persists, you can send me the firmware and app versions.
  2. Please check if there are special settings on the router for the camera, such as MAC Filtering, Access Control, and Parental Control. If so, disable or remove these entries for a try.
  3. If you reboot the camera only after the issue occurs, will the camera recover the internet connection?

Is there a reason to suspect the 2 factor authentication the cause of this issue? I have disabled it for now and the camera works fine after adding it back from a reset in Tapo app. I will monitor it for some more time to see if the issue reoccurs.

 

Btw, i have disabled the features like smart connect, Parental controls and MAC filtering in my router long back. I have also updated the firmware today to 1.3.3 too.

 

I have seen the issue reoccur when there is a power outage and the camera switches on when power resumes. At this step the led is solid amber, it is cconnected to wifi and is tracking the movements, but looks offline in tapo app.

Hi,
Generally, the 2FA feature won't cause the camera to keep going offline.
You can go to the Tapo app > camera's Device Settings > Reboot Camera page to enable the Auto Reboot feature and check if it helps.

I think the firmware update and re login to my tp link account indeed worked and the number of disconnects to wifi are seen to be low.

 

However i see another problem here. I dont have power backup for my wifi extender or the camera so if the power goes off and comes back the camera is not automatically retrying to connect to wifi..I suspect the camera is rebooting faster than the wifi extender and it doesnt probably retry to attempt to connect to wifi signal. I have to reboot the camera once again to be able to connect to wifi extender.

 

Is there a way to configure the retry attempts in Tapo C520ws or to remotely manage the reboot of the camera through some means to address the above scenario?

Today i see my camera again went into solid amber led state and is always showing solid amber and offline in tapo app. The router is working perfectly, all mobiles, laptops connected to the router (Wifi extender) are working perfectly.

 

I guess there is some hardware/firmware issue and i think i need to ask for warranty now. Also i see the issue is very much similar to following post i see in these threads:

I have restarted router, wifi extender, camera, did hardreset, logged out logged into to Tapo account and no use at all.

 

Please advise how to move forward.

Hi,

 

The problem is now reproduced and i have capture the required log from the SD card. I could not attach the same to this thead, possibly because of the size limitations, however i have sent the same as email to Tapo support. Kindly provide the root cause on what could be the issue on why the camera shows offline suddenly in Tapo app.
