Tapo C510W V1 & TC41 V1,  FW: v1.3.1

Phenomenon Description

After the Tapo C510W and TC41 update to the firmware version 1.3.1 Build 241111 Rel.29618n, the length of the detection video recordings stored on the SD card became shorter than before, only about  20 seconds.

Workaround

1. Why do detection video recordings saved to SD become shorter?

To support compatibility between the camera and hub (H200/H500), we have modified the recording duration for SD card detection events. If no detection activity occurs within 10 seconds after a detection event ends, the recording will stop.

This modification does not change the detection functionality and will not result in missed detection events. Additionally, it will reduce the amount of idle recording time, thus extending the period before the SD card becomes full for storing more detection video recordings.

2. If you experience missed detection events or incomplete recordings after updating to the latest firmware

Please provide the following information for further analysis.
    (1) Please go to the Tapo app > camera’s Device Settings > Detection page, and check what detection types are enabled and the sensitivity value.

    (2) How frequently do you experience missed detections or incomplete recording events?

    (3) Please provide a video showing the reported issue for further analysis.

    (4) Send us the camera’s model number and hardware version.

I think this reduced recording time is a retrograde step and I'd like to revert to the previous firmware level if possible.

I am seeing cars driving on to my driveway and then stopping. The recording stops before the driver exits the vehicle as no movement is detected once the car has stopped. This means the driver is no longer recorded.

I have already requested a configurable length of recording once there is no more movement detected. This is crucial to capturing events on my property.

To make this change merely to save space on the SD card when the recordings can loop anyway is ludicrous.

It's clearly better to have a recording which is too long rather than one which is too short!

Please provide a fix for this or a way to revert to firmware 1.2.3

Regards,

AJ

I totally agree with your reply all important activity is now not being recorded this is now no use as a security camera, surely it's up to the end user who decides how much is recorded on the SD card, a fix is required to restore the settings as before. This is not an improvement it's a backwards step the recording time before the update was just about right. Urgent action required

Yes it's not a good improvement with the latest firmware upgrade and agree urgent addressing of this issue is required.

Perhaps you could upvote my suggestion to have a configurable time after movement has been detected.

This link should get you there.

@Wheezy_1 I totally agree. There should be an option that allow the end user to set how much is recorded or made a tool to easily downgrade.

Hi,
Thank you for the video provided. However, the new firmware won't affect your usage scenario for the following reasons:
The new firmware does not change the time it takes for the camera to return to its original position after tracking an event.
1. If someone gets out of the car before the camera returns to its original position, the camera will detect the event and start recording.
2. If someone gets out of the car after the camera returns to its original position, the camera cannot record the event, but before the firmware upgrade, the camera could not record the event either.

However, if you experience missed detection events or incomplete recordings after updating to the latest firmware, it would be appreciated if you could provide the information mentioned on this thread for further analysis.

Best Regards

I strongly disagree with your statement

"the new firmware won't affect your usage scenario

1. If someone gets out of the car before the camera returns to its original position, the camera will detect the event and start recording"

What you cite above is not happening. The video I sent clearly shows me backing my car into my driveway.

The camera tracks the movement.

I stop the car.

The recording then stops as I have not exited the car within a few seconds.

The camera returns to the home position following the recording ceasing and misses the most important event of me getting out of the car!

Why is this so difficult to understand?

The recording is not long enough after the end of the the detection of movement to record someone exiting a vehicle.

My submitted video clearly shows the recording stopping before I get out of the car.

This has only been a problem since the last firmware upgrade.

Again, the time the recording continues after the last movement detection should be configurable and this apparently has been submitted as a Change Request.

The idea to shorten the recording length after movement is ceased to save SD storage space is flawed, since my only work around now is to record 24/7 to ensure that all events are captured including people exiting a vehicle. This will clearly use much more SD storage.

Please let me know if you are not understanding the scenario here and please review again the video I submitted. The recording stops within seconds of the vehicle stopping and before I exit the vehicle. It is this length of time which needs to be configured or I need to downgrade to 1.2.3.

Kind regards,

AJ
